Q: Steering Gearbox maintenance grease?
95 Accord, poorly maintained by former owners:
I Looked in the archives on steering gearbox maintenance, I didn't find anything about this topic. Helms Maintenance Chapter, on page 4-2, says to grease the power steering gearbox, with part # 08733-B070E. Honda Parts guy said, "Say what ... we don't have it, never did, never sold it." So, either this is one of those maintenance charts that fails to get edited from car to car and is not applicable to an Accord, or the Honda techs are ignoring that item, or maybe it means the linkage joints. But the pic arrow is pointing to the engine compartment rack. I don't see anything in the steering section about this maintenance. But I do see that when you are working on the gearbox, and the boots are off, it does mention using a silicone grease on the inner boot and the shaft ends ...
But I'm not about to do that unless those boots are attached with zips or worm clamps [doubt it]. I have a Perma-Quick tool, but no Oetiker tool [would get one if needed]... however, I do not know how to identify either clamp, yet, much less how to use either tool. Those type of clamps are something I am still learning about. Anyhow, anyone know about this maintenance item?
Btw, I have had stiff steering on some non-Honda vehicles, and greasing the U joints helped greatly. So, I think I will at least check the joints to see if they are dried up. When I check the joints for grease under the "cover tube" in the interior, is there any trick to removing the 3 clips or 2 tube clamps? Fastener removal without breakage, is always one of my biggest problems.
