Default Rear Brakes "clunking" sound

2005 Honda Civic EX SE
Rear brakes are making a "clunking" sound when the emergency brakes is released. It only does it after the car sits for a while (few hours, overnight, etc.). Do the brakes need cleaned, is this a problem that should be fixed or is this just something that the dealer is going to screw me for $85 to "clean" them - since the car is still under warranty? Thanks in advance.

Does it do it immediately after the e-brake is released, or when you first start moving after you've released it?

Either way.. sounds like something is sticking and then releasing. Pull your drums off and take a look.
(some shops offer free inspections. you might call around.)

It makes the clunk when the car starts moving. It doesn't make the sound when the emergency brake is released but as soon as I left off of the brake pedal the sound occurs.

If the car has been sitting in the rain, or driven in the rain and parked, the shoes may rust to the drums and stick a little, then brake loose when you start to move the car. Mine has done this b4, pretty sure this is why.

Check your stabilizer links. They should be solid with no movement.
My driver side rear brakes were making a clunking sound too. Bled it, disassembled it, cleaned it, replaced wheel cylinder, lubed and anti-seized points where shoes met the dust shield. All that and it still made that clunking noise after 20 minutes of driving. Odd thing is, the passenger side has the same parts as the driver side drums. Yet, it never made that clunking noise. But a couple of my friends, a mechanic and body tech checked it out and remedied that it could be the stabilizer links since they were pretty worn and did make a clunking noise. Getting it replaced. Hopefully it's the problem.
