Default VSS problem, seized gear?

Well for the past couple days I have been trying to figure out if my VSS needs replaced. I have a 92 Prelude with a M2B4 tranny. It started out a while back with my speedo jumping around and intermittently working, now it just stays off and I'm throwing code 17. I pulled the VSS off and opened it up and its pretty clean inside, no corrosion. I'm just curious if the gear inside the tranny is likely to fail, (seize or strip). I also looked down at the piece that the VSS fits on and it has two little metal tabs sticking up, I tried to spin it with a flat head and no luck so maybe that ruled out a stripped gear. Before I go spend the cash on one I would like to know the possibilities.

sounds like the sensor is faulty.i doubt the gear in the tranny would be stripped or seized. the gear on the VSS would be stripped before the tranny gear. try resetting the ecu and if the check engine light stays while the cars not moving then you will definitely know the sensor has gone bad.
