Icon6 New Build 2 motors 2 chose from (b18c5 vs b18c1 )

Okay, I want to start off by saying i've been searching and reading for about 2 years now but still unclear on somethings. I have a stock usdm b18c5 engine in my type R now, and i have a b18c1 stock block with with a port and polished 95 p72 head also (sitting duck).

My power goal :300-350 WHP Stock Block Running 93 oct./ Daily driven/ Weekend Warrior.
I should also mention that im keeping AC, and Powersteering. I live in florida and i need AC in my daily

My dilemma: My intentions is on Boosting The R because its a better motor IMO even tho the compression is higher I think a cometic headgasket and a Good Tune might just solve my compression issue on the b18c5. I hear alot of people that would preffer the GSR but some statements talk about the price difference, in this case its not a problem since i have both engines.

Would really like some input as far a budget build like this. What motor would you use and why? Thanks

If your only going for 350whp just leave the ITR block the way it is (do a comp and leakdown test first) and boost it, end of story... make sure you use a competent tuner.

If you have the b18c5 block, just boost that. It will be fine.

ok, thanks for the input guys. 350whp seems reasonable to me for daily driving and im not going to be beating on it, Only when needed

how about the headgasket? should i use a OEM,Cometic, or something else to lower compression?

Sell the B18C5, and it will more than pay for a decent turbo kit & dyno tune.

For a DAILY DRIVER, the B18C5 will be riskier, and have less low/mid range power. The B18C1, assuming it has the stock IM, will feel much more powerful on the road, given the same peak numbers. Even if it has a single-runner manifold, I'd still use it. Ported heads are hard to sell and not loose money, and will still make power like the ITR.

Care to explain why a C5 will make less power and low/midrange power than a C1 with the same kit at the same psi? I think your mistaken.... the cams and the compression alone will make more power over the C1, that ported head isnt going to do jack ish for his 350whp setup...

I would sell the c5 to some jdm nut swinger and boost the c1, it will be safer and you will have significantly more money.

JDM/USDM doesn't really matter at this point, what does is people will still pay retarded prices for a documented ITR.

Maybe we're talking about different RPM's? By low/mid I mean before ~5k. Show me a few C5's spanking similarly-equiped C1's before that, given the dual-runner manifold, and I'll appologize. Just because you add boost doesn't mean NA principals, specifically intake manifold design, get thrown out the window.

FYI This dyno shows the exact same setup & pressure, just with stock 10:1 vs forged 9:1 - and both are tuned. So half a point difference will be all of avg of 10hp difference - in boost. Before that, it gains nothing.

it just seems tho that if i can hit this 350whp mark with the type R and be safe i'll be happy. The GSR needs to be hone and bored do to it sitting for like 2 years got some rust on the cylinders, and the GSR head has 8 bent valves on intake side even tho its ported and polished.

I think i should sell the GSR Setup and use some of that money on my current motor since its already installed and ready to run.

I dont study Honda sheets before 5000rpm... I dont know too many people worried about the power output of their boosted Honda from idle to 5000rpm, in all honesty it takes .5sec to go from 4k to 5k and 10ft/lb of torque really isnt going to make much of a difference, if he wants to race in that region he needs to get an LS with a 28R and ditch the whole VTEC option all together.

I was referencing the type of people who would pay dumb money for that engine and it wasn't a joke.

Amen

The R will spool faster and make more power than the GSR psi to psi

You should be able to hit 350 on 8-10psi with the right turbo...easy pump gas tune on that low boost

sounds good to me, i'll take it.

now what kind of turbo should i be looking for to accomodate this powergoal with fast spooling. would like to have a little room for improvement in the turbo just incase i get powerhungry and hit 375-400ish. I uderstand i need a good tune following the turbo intall, my car is obd2 so i would need to get a obd2 to obd1 jumper harness and a chipped p28 or something right? thanks

put the itr cams in the gsr. sell the itr with the gsr cams in it.. pay for a better kit/tune.

GSR engine ftw. Lower compression while keeping a great quench area. That Hype-R engine will pay for the previously stated turbo kit and tune and possibly a set of cams, with which you will make more power on that head.

what im trying to debate is, is the tad bit lower compression gonna be worth the effort of taking out my motor now C5, trying to sell it (downtime) and then work on the C1. I just dont see my great advantage on the R. Does anybody else agree or am i missing something special that the C5 doesnt have over the C1.

sounds like too much hassle to me, just boost what you have now', find a good tuner and you"ll be fine

Well general rule of thumb is 10 hp per psi of boost (some get more some get less) and the stock honda pistons have weak ring lands so those r gonna break right away. The Type R is to great of an engine to boost and break in the first 10 miles (not saying it is gonna blow up) to me. The C1 is already out and apart I would start building it now and then just swap it out. I understand HiProfiles point with the low/mid power and manifold too. The GSR mani was designed to make great mid range power, the Type R was designed to make topend power for prolonged periods of time. I would use the C1 too if I was u.

i want to thank everybody for all the great input. Well i've come to the conclusion that im just going to leave the C5 alone in my car and do things right by building the C1 that's already taken apart and building it right from the get for MAJOR BOOST. Then i'll get a hatch or coupe and slap that in there

hasnt seen a dyno yet, when it does i only want around 250-275 until i throw in my piston/rods. but on the low boost im on im guessing around 230-245
