99 prelude won't rev past 6500 after spark plug change
Anyone encountered this before?
I just changed my spark plugs (and topped up the engine oil a bit at the same time). Now the revs are being limited to 6500. No check engine light. I tried putting the old plugs back in, and still have the problem. Also tried torquing the plugs in a bit more (was using 13 ft-lbs as per manual), but didn't help. Any ideas? Just coincidence that this happened now?

^^^ if what he said didnt apply to you then i would try resetting the computer and see if the problem persist. if it does then i would look at your coil, if the coils good i would try lookin at your igniter.
thanks for the thoughts. Here's more info:
It used to rev past 6500 in neutral no prob. This is also happening in 1st and second gear too. I've tried disconnecting the battery - not sure if that's the correct way to reset the ECU. But after reconnecting, still have the problem.
The car is completely stock under the hood.
A friend at the local honda dealership says the system might not be used to the bigger spark with the new plugs, and it might be limiting because the EGR valve has carbon buildup (it's never been cleaned or changed on my car, and this is the first time I'm changing the sparks). Supposedly there was a service bulletin about this which he's trying to find.
That sound right to anyone? Thanks for the suggestions.

well if theres a problem within the egr system you would think the CEL would come on. this is very weird. never heard of this happening. btw, what kind of plugs did you install?

The plugs are made by NGK. However, they are not the oem laser platinum PZFR6F-11
They are ZFR6FGP G-Power platinum, because that was all I could find in the store when I went. However, according to the application guide, these are still suitable. Anyway, when I tried putting the old (laser platinum) plugs back in the problem didn't go away so that tells me it could be something else that changed.
Engine temp - it was warmed up enough I think. And VTEC was engaging, but seemed a bit weak. As for hitting 6500, it's the rev limiter that's keeping it from going past. It's possible the computer might just need to adjust, or it really hadn't warmed up enough yet. Maybe it will adjust over the next few days of driving.

You gotta make sure it's up to normal operating temperture and that you are not in neutral. Vtec will not engage unless these requirements are met. And that's exactly what it sounds like is happening. 6500 is the rev limit when vtec does not engage. Go out, let the car warm up all the way, then go out for a short drive. See if the problem persists.
Dude you were totally right.
So I drove my 40 min route between work and home today, and lo and behold, the engine was happily revving past 6500 after I was well into my commute. Looks like I was either too eager to try out my new plugs after installing them, or maybe the ECU adjusted. Probably the former.
In any case, thanks for all the great suggestions. You guys rock!

shoot man, i would of figured you already knew that the car had to reach operating temperature. well, glad to hear you didnt have a problem after all. and im sorry i didnt ask that question sooner.
It is not suppossed to rev higher than 6500 until the car is moving at about 10-15mph,I think. Only modded ECUs can redline in neutral.
im not saying the OP is dumb for not knowing that but.... well now you know. plus i usualy dont even move my car untill its ATLEAST reached 1/4 way on the temp gauge.
like bigblock22^^ stated, glad you dont have a serious issue (unless your still not leting it warm up b4 you start slamming it then YOUR the problem not your car :p)
