Very simple.

EVERY TIME that the weather warms up below freezing, take it to a car wash and spray off the car, including wheelwells and undercarriage. You don't necessarily have to wash the whole thing, but spray off the salt religiously EVERY TIME it's warm enough. Make sure you get the area under the trunk/back bumper, and pay attention to suspension components, muffler, etc.

Don't do it when it's below freezing, or going to get below freezing, or you'll hate life when you try to open your doors/windows.

Also, if you still have the black rubber trim strips around the inside of the wheelwells, remove them. Water gets trapped under them and causes the fenders to rust.

Finally, Get some spray undercoating. About once a year, I use it to touch up any areas where the undercoating has started to wear away. I've found that the wheelwell undercoating WILL wear away if you hit it with a pressure washer once a week for 9 years as I have. Just lightly touch up those areas as needed before they start to corrode.

If you have any surface rust under the car (like under the trunk... almost all Civics do), hit it with a wire brush and some rustoleum. I find that grey rustoleum exactly matches the non-clearcoat Honda silver paint that's under my back bumper.

I've been doing this for years. My car's 10 years old, has zero rust, and hardly even any rusty bolts.

When I lived in MD I would just hit the automatic car wash every other day and get the cheapest wash... It was like $4.00 and it hit the undercarriage and got all the salt off of the rest of the car...

Then I went with the ultimate solution and moved to FL...
