Default How do you identify gears by themselves?

Hey guys, came into some NIB gears for a B series but the person that has them has no idea what gears they came from or for. He has 2nd, 3rd, and 5th with some spares synchros.

Could you guys tell me how I should go by identifying what gears they are for ??

I appreciate the help guys!

Dang

Count the teeth, see which synchro's they take (LS or B16A/B18C).

What do you mean what they take? I am not so worried about the synchros as much as the gears...

So counting the teeth on the gears will tell me what they are and for?

Thanks Aquafina, can always count on ya for transmission questions!

Thanks, I will check back to see what they are - have a good night!

LS and B16/B18C use different size synchros.

Just got word that the 2nd gear has 39 teeth and the 3rd gear has 33 teeth. Seems to be LS gears, am I right?

Is 2nd setup for a single or dual synchro? What synchro does 3rd take? (not on my comp right now so I don't have the tooth count available).

i dont think the person has any clue, as do I about knowing if it takes a single or dual...

Look up the 2nd gear and seems to be a Y1 S1 88-91 B16 gear.

The 3rd gear is stumping me, cant find anything remotely close to that.

I will keep on trying to figure it out.

To tell if a 2nd is set up for dual synchro:

If the gear just has 3 holes but no synchro cone, it's a dual synchro (VTEC) 2nd gear.
If the gear has a synchro cone built into it, it's an LS.

Are the gears just in boxes and not in OEM Honda bags? You have any pics? They could help.

Well, top 2 are 1-2 sleeve. Bottom 2 I'm guessing to be 3rd gear (but it's hard to tell without dimensions; either your hands are small or that gear could also be a 2nd gear). If we knew the OD of the synchro cone nearest the gear, we could tell you what it was (LS or VTEC).

Yea, I do not have these in my possession so those are pics the seller sent to me.

The guy said one is 2nd and the other is 3rd but how would he know if he doesnt know what gear each are... URGH... Might just have to give up on this...
