Wouldn't this be a better theft deterrent for HU?/?
For the head units that flip over or flip closed to paint very visibly on the back face "SECURITY CODED" or something like this? Just an idea for disscution. I think thieves know black face in the center console in a nice car is a flip face and I think security codes are very good deterrent. What do you think?
I don't think they care.. I mean when I see a Kenwood D-mask, JVC Chameleon or whatever flip face I always KNOW from first sight that its a flip face... I think a theif knows what they are looking at... I don't think it'd matter if their going to break in their going to break in... if they can't get your stereo.. they can get your speakers, cds, leather seats, subs, whatever...
But wait a minute, My kenwood does have a flip face, detachable face AND security code. If they are looking for a HU and see it's a flip face they will break in take it and have to throw it away because of the code. It plays MP#'s so I'll have only 1-3 CD-R's with all my music. No leather seats or subs to be seen. Over all isn't that a better DETERRENT. (I never said make my HU unstealable or my car break in proof).
you didn't read the message.. I never said "unstealable" I just said they don't care if they want to break in for something their going to break in.. their not going to shine a flash light inside at night and be like "oh $hit it says theres a theft code" better not break in to steal the stereo or anything else...
if it has a deteachable face why not just remove it? replacement faceplates are around $200 and up.. my friend wanted to replace his faceplate but after finding out the cost he just said forget it and bought a new head unit..
yeah if their looking for a head unit and see its a flip face they will know its pretty obvious... having to throw it away.. umm I don't know about that...
I guess if it makes u feel better go ahead and paint lettering on your head unit.. but IMO it doesn't help.. its not like their going to look inside and read the lettering and decide not to break in...

The best theft deterent is to keep your OEM deck up top and mount your aftermarket deck under it. It will take creativity and time to get it in right, when someone looks though your window, all they would see is your oem head. They'll need to look closely to notice you have an aftermarket deck underneath.
I can shut off your security code with my remote control. So you might want to remove the face. And no I am not a thief, just an installer.

i saw an install where the deck was recessed by an extra inch, and the stock deck face was cut, and placed over it.
It looked great, just pop on the faux stock face and go

DC... thats what i did... Only i had an ABS Plastic plate up top, with my flip face Sony CD Player down below... and i had the 96-98 CupHolders that when the cover wasn't down, it would sit against the face of the CD Player... And when you turned the car off, the face flipped away, and the cupholder lid would move up, hidin the head unit..
You can also buy fake decks that will cover up your deck.
the new alpine phantom face is the closest to looking like the face was removed because the face slips into the deck when off. but theifs dont care usually, they will break into anything hopping for a good score. i have had customers who had their decks stolen even with the face removed. moral to the story is that theifs are dumasses.
Not really.....they go to retailers and rip faceplates off display units then take them to flea markets and unethical dealers who give them a few bucks and then flip the gear to unknowing persons looking for deals.
