Alright, last bike option available this summer
Alright guys, you know what I've been through. I've had these bike opportunities but they just keep falling through. This is the last one until next year.
Concerns about buying it now:
#1) Summer is over, and I move into school Friday. School is about 30 minutes from home. School means more expenses, less time to fool around, and the season is rapidly escaping.
#2) Once I buy the bike, I start paying for insurance on my car. My dad has me covered right now, but through his insurance its like $380/year. When I switch it over to my own insurance company (State Farm) the car will cost $1080 for minimum coverage. The bike would be $852 for full coverage. So that's $1932 a year, if I wait until next summer (about 8 months away) I save about $1200.
#3) I'm afraid of a bike this big. My goal was to find a F3/F4. I would be extremely careful, and take my time learning, and wear gloves/helmet/jacket/boots at all times. But I know it only goes as fast as I want it to..
Here is the deal:
1 97 CBR 900RR, 9500 or so miles.
2 XL Shoei RF700 Black Helmets
1 PitBull Spooled and Standard Rear Stand
1 Pair of Honda Gloves (Large)
The bike has been jetted, and has a full Akrapovic Exhaust. It sounds nice.
Bike is very clean, had a friend of mine check it out with me. I've been talking with him off and on, and he said $5200 would take everything.
Help?

a 900RR? And this is your first bike?
I'd say wait until the '03 models come out- that's when everybody else sells their bikes, and you can pick up a used bike really cheap. No need to rush things... I was looking at bikes for about a year before I got my '99 F4. The lady I bought it off wanted a new bike really bad ('02 954RR) so she gave me a good deal. Also, where do you live? Is winter riding a viable option for you? If it isn't, then I don't see the point of buying a bike now if the bike is gonna be in storage for the next 8 months. You also mentioned that you'd be riding in full gear- that alone would cost you quite a bit... since you said you'd be saving about $1200 if you bought your bike next summer, I'd say wait it out a bit if it wouldn't kill you- again, if you wouldn't be riding much, then I see no point in buying a bike now. The $1200 you save could get you some nice gear (at least a full set of good leathers and some gloves) so I'd just wait.

Winter riding isn't really an option, no. There are good days and bad days, and people say they can ride their bike up to November, and they're back out February/March.. all depends on the weather.
Thanks for your opinion, I really appreciate it.
Perhaps if the deal is /that/ good (is this one?) I could buy it now and just not ride it until next summer, saving the $1200.

It still remains a bad bike to learn on (96-97 models have very quick steering and there is too much power too).
The financial deal may be good but if your skills are not up to it, you may get hurt and will surely not enjoy it as much as a smaller bike, unless you nejoy being in over your head.

I agree, it may be a good deal but it's gonna be way more bike than you can handle. Stick to a 600cc bike at most... I'm sure you'll be able to find an F3 for about 3500-4000. I picked up my F4 for a little over 4k.
Do you have health insurance? I feel insurance on a bike is dumb. I plan on just getting minimum for if it gets stolen, like $300 a year. Full coverage on a bike is usually $3k.
If you get hurt, chances are someone will hit you, not vice versa.

Whether you begin or not, you can screw up. Assuming you are that good is almost ridiculous.
The coverage of 3k+ will be only if you are on a bike you do not belong on as a beginner (Gixxer, blah blah). Otherwise you can easily stay below 1k for full coverage.

you know what you should do but you feel that all your work towards your license and researching bikes has gone to waste. Well it hasn't and nothing good ever comes out of making a poor choice due to pressure. You can spend the winter studying, making some money and learning more about how to think when riding and be much better prepared for the new year w/ more money, more knowledge and buying a bike when it is a buyers market. It is true, there are a lot of people that sell cheap to get the new models. This should be especially good for you as the new cbrs are pretty popular. Bigger experienced rider bikes tend to sell all season long where 600's get a big boom in spring. I know this b/c my garage shares space w/ powersports.

Matt, dont be a puss, get the damn thing already
A guy with a 97 F3 just contacted me and said he could sell it for $3600.. I'm looking into that too. Being at school now just makes everything harder.

Since you said winter riding isn't an option for you, why don't you just wait it off? I understand you wanting a bike really bad but self control can be a very valuable trait. This is coming from a 21 yr old that waited a year after taking the MSF course until buying a bike. I searched everyday through the classifieds looking for a bike. no rush- there are plenty of bikes out there and it seems like you wouldn't be riding much right now if you got one anyways. As for those who started on a literbike or what not, I guess you guys have your own opinion and I have mine.
Wait.
With college comes girls, with girls comes temptation, with temptation comes trying to be a badass for them, with that combined with a 900RR and you being a new rider = Short college stay

I think the F3 seller is pretty desperate. It went from $4500 to $4000 to $3500 in a couple of weeks. That bike was pushed over once, has some damage on one fairing, 9xxx miles, full exhaust (not sure), different sprockets, etc.. but I don't know how well it has been taken care of. I think it sits outside in the rain, and its got a rusty chain and whatnot..
Question, would it be dumb to buy say that F3 now and just store it and not insure it. That way I could have it at the very beginning of next summer? Or do you think it is more advantageous just to wait and buy something next summer?
One advantage to just buying the bike and storing it somewhere, is that I won't have to 'waste' time looking for one next summer. Thoughts on that?

I agree man.. i'm gonna have my msf course next weekend.. and i'm not looking for a bike till spring.. college/bills and depreciation.... looks to me like we are in the same exact position.. honestly.. you can wait.. that f3 sounds too shady.. don't even mess around with something you suspect wasn't taken care of.. and the 900.. i mean cmon man.. it'd be one thing if all you had to do is ride.. but no time to ride combined with all the other stuff.. i say just wait.. thats what i'm gonna do.. if you are really anxious check out the clearance sales for gear.. slowly aquire stuff.. and then you will be all set when you want to get a bike. just my .02 good luck man
I'm selling this bike because I have not had a chance to ride it this year, also, I am getting married next year. Time to get rid of some toys. There are a few minor flaws in the bike, I admit that. I normally store the bike in a heated garage, but because I am selling it, it has sat outside for a few days. As for the rusted chain, that has been taken care of. The fairing has MINOR damage from being pushed over, there was some scratches, and I wet sanded it to prep for paint...haven't had a chance to do it. The sprocket change was because it was due for it, and I wanted some low end power. I do not do tricks, wheelies, stoppies, ect. It's just not my style. If you're still interested matt, let me know, if not, let me know. No big deal either way. If you want to look at the bike, we will work something out.

Hey Patrick, I'm glad you found your way over to this board. I like it 10000x than ClubSi, which I only go to for the Michigan forum.
I don't think I'm going to end up getting anything this summer. I moved back to school over the weekend and I've been super busy. If I buy it now I just wouldn't have any time to ride it.. I think that's what it pretty much comes down to. I tell you what I told the guy with the 900RR, that if your bike is still around next summer definately get a hold of me again.
Good luck selling it either way, buddy.

****, I'll take it now if you want to talk some more about the price. I bring that up b/c you probably will need to ship it to me. DC metro. All the flaws you mentioned are pretty easy jobs. Other than it being a cbr
I dont see any problems. Sure its not a zx6r but at least its not a weaker f4i.

I don't know about shipping...kind of a hassle. Anyways, the paint is fixed...it's better than it was before, but not perfect...only noticeable if looking for it. The chain is non-rusty. I sprayed it with a thick *** coat of wax before storage this winter, which actually didn't sit for more than about a week becuase of the kick *** weather. Anyways, the rust was on top of the wax, so it cleaned up.
