broken clutch cable
so i got off the 401 and was down shifting to 4th and boom clutch peddel goes to the floor in my 89 hatch...i manage to get it to my house and come to find out the clutch cable snapped right flush to the adjuster nut on the cable....i have it all out and im gettin a new cable in the morning. But my question is what is the reason this broke? ive never heard or seen one break b4 and ive owned ALOT of these cars?..i mean its got 270thousand km on the car i dunno if that would be a reason as like ive said ive owned alot of these with alot more then that on it lol...any input will help!
thanks
thanks
There is no answer unless you send that cable out for analysis.
Maybe it was rubbing on something and wore?
Maybe it had a weak strand and broke?
Everything has a weak point... you found the one for that cable.

i can't believe you guys have never broken one. i've broken at least 1 for every swap i've had, in fact i've broken enough to where i now keep a spare brand new cable at all times in the car.
Some possible causes are,
- stiff aftermarket clutch
- you clutch arm coming out of the tranny could be a little seized or just not move as free as it should.
- the cable could be rusty in the jacket causing it to bind
- another killer of clutch cables is routing it under the intake manifold to "hide" it, this puts too many curves and bends in the cable that aren't supposed to be there and causes it to bind.
- last but not least it could have just been its time, its not the thick of a cable if you think about how much force it takes to move the pressure plate.
could be anything, get 2 new ones and keep a spare in the car so you don't get stuck again
