Default Need help with complex VTEC activation issue!

Hi folks,

I could really use some help on this one. I am stumped.
Vehicle is a 4g civic with a 1997 JDM type-r(b18c) motor. ECU is a P28 Hondata set-up. The problem we are having is that we cannot get the Hondata ECU to send the +12v VTEC activation signal.

What we know:
- JDM motor does not have an oil pressure switch. Wire from the ECU that would normally go to the switch is firmly grounded.
- If we substitute the stock JDM ITR ecu, VTEC engages normally. This would seem to confirm that the ECT switch and VTEC solenoid are working properly.
- The Hondata ECU works fine if it is used in another (USDM) car. This seems to indicate that there is a vehicle wiring issue, we just cannot determine what. There was a lot of customer wiring done in the engine / chassis harness so it is a possibility.
- We have tried anoher chipped p28 (Skunk2) ECU and it behaves the same way as the hondata. It won't engage vtec in this car, but works in other US-market integras.
- We have intermittently gotten a CEL code of 21 - VTEC spool.

Any and all thoughts would be appreciated.

-Phillip

maybe you have to try something diffrent ECU P28 isnt for that motor your ecu is for D16z you need to get a P62 A11 that should work much better

Chad,
Could you elaborate a little more - there is a big tach involved....

Are you having a problem with vtec engaging??????? I might've missed that if you stated it but if you are running a JDM motor then you have to substitute the JDM Vtec solenoid for a USDM one that will have wires not tapped off. Your JDM ECU works vtec because it is set up not to look for oil pressure to engage it.

If you are running a P28 then find a vtec solenoid of any b-series motor. (There was a debate about if the SOHN vtec solenoid would work but I don't know if they can or not, I just happen to have a spae solenoid when we swapped a 98 ITR motor in EH).

Keep us posted.
