Some common possible causes -- main relay, coil, igniter unit.
When the engine won't start, listen for whether the fuel pump fails to prime and check whether there is no bright white spark at the plugs.

I had a similar problem with the igniter unit: One of the wire leads broke free in the epoxy (so it slid around causing an intermittent problem) This was in a NEW distributor (it wasn't made for colder climates)

Check for bright white spark at the plugs.
If you don't have spark, check the igniter unit and coil and whether the timing belt snapped.
If you have spark, check whether the timing belt skipped some teeth.
