Abot to buy a S2000 with 169K miles... what should I look for?
Hey all,
I'm about to buy an 01 S2K with 169K miles on it for a really good price. Question is what do I look for?
The car already needs an engine so at least I don't have to worry about that. I'm planning on getting an engine/tranny combination from somewhere so the tranny shouldn't be an issue either.
I'm planning on installing coilovers so the shocks and struts shouldn't be an issue.
I'm planning on getting an exhaust with high flow cat so that stuff is also good to go.
The diff JUST got rebuild so its fine too.
I believe the top needs to be looked at due to a patch but other then that what else breaks at the high milage on an S2K?
I was thinking Axles, bearings. etc.. but I just wanna know what to look at when I check it out today.
Help me out S2K forum!
I was also planning on having a honda-tech get together to install this new engine (BBQ style), I'll provide drinks, food, and of coarse $$$ for the people helping (this won't be till its warm though)

sweet im down... you should contact Black S2K... he recently totalled his S and was looking to part out his engine and tranny... he also might have coils for sale... and he lives in pa so its not to far from you...
as to your question about what you should look for, youre pretty much replacing everything that would be associated with going bad at 170K... obviously i would still replace all fluids...
ohhh and kyle is selling a soft top for mad cheap too... something to look into...

Really? Black S2K is selling his motor? Well **** I need a freaking motor! and Coilovers?!? SWEET and a TOP just AWESOME!
I already PM'd Black S2K about the engine. What Kyle's screen name so I can ask him about the top?
So the fluids to replace are Brake and Radiator right? If I'm getting a new Engine and Tranny those will be done once I put it in.
I really appreciate your help so far.
Oh and a Honda-Tech, S2K, Engine Swap BBQ would be crazy fun. A learning experience for all with the chance to earn some cash for helping.

+1 I think you are taking care of most of the things that wear down really. Anything else just deal with when the time comes. to bad you so far... Denver is a bit far to go from for a BBQ haha. Congrats on the buy!

Yeah it should be fun and a learning experience at the same time. I've never owned a car that didn't have a lean so its gonna be cool not worrying about voiding warranties or even better not messing up my primary car. Hopefully I learn enough on this car to be able to do a lot of my own work in the future. I mean don't get me wrong, I can install exhausts, intakes, suspensions, intercoolers, etc.. however an entire engine swap... I haven't even attempted it yet. That along with replacing the top is going to be a challenge.
I'm actually looking to get a new tool kit in preparation for everything. What to you suggest would have all the tool I need without breaking the bank?
I found a place to rent a hoist from for 99 per week and I already have jack stands.. this is a gonna be NUTS however I'm sure my H-T friends will help me through.
Oh and what Clutch/Flywheel combo should I pick up?

Not bad at all from the outside, anyways. What was the reason for the non-running engine? High mileage, abuse, mods?
Make sure you get '03 or newer engine F20C/22C w/ the updated oil banjo bolts. Have someone knowledgable w/ the F20C check the retainers for damage. The F22C already has the stronger retainers.

yeah thats pretty good considering its got a clean title, and the body looks perfect... a tranny and engine combo should run you around 2-3... and then after all of your upgrades, your looking at like 5 invested... 10K spent on a mild modded S with a brand new top, engine, and tranny... yeah i would say pretty good deal indeed...
congrats! i want to find another S like this with a blown motor and do the supra swap to it (my current S is too nice to mess up, lol).
what color is it?

However new tops aren't crazy expensive, its like 799 for the whole thing.
Theres a guy locally selling a new soft top for 800 from an 08. I dont want to spend more than 2-300 used I dont care as long as it doesnt have any rips. Im about to buy a hardtop soon, so its temporary.
The cloth only from the dealer is about 1100 + 1000 for the install. The frame is another 1000 from the dealer.
Dealers are such a ripoff, I buy used, parts from wrecked cars etc. This hardtop price is enough to make me sick. I have 8k in the car total about to spend another 3k just for a roof.
I'm sure he will reply, the top he has is the fabric only (I think) and it's 02+ so it does have the glass window. You need a frame from 02+ to go with this top if you have an 00-01.
For 800, it's probably the frame and the fabric. That's about the going rate. Relize if you get a frame with the cloth already on it, the install is much easier. You probably will not find a glass top (cloth only) for under 300. In fact, 300$ is dirt cheap.
