Just got a ticket for my four point harness!
I believe that only the Schroth brand of aftermarket seatbelts are DOT legal, meaning they are the only company who has paid money into our great system, in order to obtain that distinction. good luck.
i'm in oakland no idea though, what'd the citation on the ticket written up as? I've always considered the bay area as quite an import tuner hot spot and 4 point harnesses being not the least bit uncommon, legal or not though i'm not sure.
Thats how i look at it too atleast i was wearing it! besides they pulled me over just to herass me they were looking for things to get me on and that was there only thing they found there hella lame.

Not in cali, but heres the law http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d12/vc27315.htm
The article never really defines a seat belt other than in section J but the language of E is open. You could make a compelling argument with pictures, product descriptions, and any truth in section J to the products installed in your car. I bet those 4 points are not DOT Approved.
This is from the Simpson website Are Simpson restraints DOT and SFI approved?
All Simpson restraints are SFI approved and dated. Simpson restraints are NOT DOT approved.

Any DOT approved harness is legal for street use. That being said, I know of only one harness that carries a DOT approval, and those are the scroth 4 points.
The ONLY street legal DOT harness that I know of is the Schroth Rallye 3 and 4. AFAIK, none of the Momo or Sparco belts carry the DOT legal rating. I guaranantee none of the el-cheapo "tuner" brand harnesses are legal!
What does all this mean? Well first of all you will NEVER see me being held into a car by some $100 wanna' be harness. My life is worth far more than that! Number two, *if* you are ever unlucky enough to be in a serious accident and someone in your car is injured wearing an illegal harness...watch out!
For more info on the hows and why of belts, go to www.schroth.com for a short education.
