Default No Vtec on my type-r motor thats in my CRX!!!!Help!!!!

OK so basically what I did is put a jdm 97 ITR engine in my 89 CRX DX. I went to the junkyard and got a whole body and engine harness off a 95 civic coupe not sure what model but it's def none vtec, so I am working here with OBD-1. I got almost everything connected and the motor fires up, but there is a check engine light. I haven't checked it on the ecu yet but I know that there has to be a code for no vtec pressure switch, because the ITR motor has no VTEC pressure switch, so I can't hook it up to the ECU. I already connected the VTEC Solenoid to the correct position on the ECU which is A4. Also the speed on the tach isn't working. Please can someone help me out, this is very confusing. Thanks.

What ecu are you using?

this is what i had to do, for your vtec solenoid. i used a 99 civic si. or you could use the gsr solenoid because they have the oil pressure switch. so your stock itr solenoid is no good. as for your tach use original vss that cam with your crx, it'll work fine too. but you should really check your codes to see why vtec ain't really working.

Well am using a chipped p28 & a po6 back & fourth. P28 to ride around the block & po6 just to turn on the car when its just sitting in my garage. So your saying that I would need a obd1 gsr solenoid? Does the solenoid assembly come with the pressure switch?

I bought the CRX as a shell so I don't have the stock CRX VSS from the old motor, but the plug from the 95 civic coupe engine harness is connected on the type-r VSS. I was thinking that the VSS on the tranny is not functioning properly or not functioning at all.

I will see if I can check the codes today or tomm.

its not working properly because you have a 95 body harness in a 89 car. its going to be a nightmare trying to make it all work. the plugs at the cluster will be for a 92-95 cluster and all the other plugs will be designed to plug into eg dash components, not ef.

the only way i see you fixing this cluster*uck is getting the correct engine and body harness for YOUR car. since it's a dx you will also need to convert the thing to mpfi. once you do that you will need to get a d-series cable vss and install it in the trans. that will get your stock speedometer working again. without switching cluster plugs i'm wondering how exactly you plugged a 92-95 harness into a 88-91 ef cluster.. because without changing over the plugs you would be unable to do that.

If you're dead set on keeping the wrong harness in the car then you've got to figure out how to plug that harness into your dash, and into the rest of the car. not an easy task if you dont' enjoy testing wires with a multimeter for a million hours straight. If you go this route then you will either have to swap plugs and use your stock cluster, or install a 92-95 civic cluster.

so you're using a chipped p28, i sure hope it has a type r map on it.. can you have it retuned to not look for the vtec pressure switch? if not then get yourself a usdm b-series dohc vtec solenoid and then that switch will be there. the solenoid and pressure switch are one assembly. it wasn't on your type r because i assume it's a jdm engine and the jdm ecu's do not look for or use a pressure switch.

yes the gsr solenoid will come with the switch.

just go to your local junkyard and pick up speedo cable and vss from a crx or integra, not sure if a integra would fit though. the speedo cable goes to your tack, and the vss is connected to the cable. for that reason your cluster tach is meant for cable only not electronic thats why your tach ain't working. unless you convert your cluster over to electronic. theres alot of write up on here on how to wire them. And finally the engine harness that you got, i don't even know if the engine harness is even suppose to have a connector for the vss. i think it seperated. not sure.

OK I am not using anything that pertains to a stock CRX DX anymore, I converted to full obd-1, even the cluster I have is an obd-1 civic cluster.

I don't have to connect anything in the dash because I have no dash board. The motor already turns on thru the key and everything is plugged in the motor. I had gotten a 92-95 ignition harness as well and install it to my original CRX ignition cylinder.

The ECU I bought is tuned by Speed Innovations. I told them to tune it for a stock 97 ITR motor with I/H/E.

I already took the REX for a ride around block with the tuned p28 and the car seem like it wants to fly!!!! it spins 2nd like nothing without VTEC. I can imagine when I get the VTEC engaging how fast its going to be!!!!! Definatly going to be way faster than my MR2 that has K&N Intake/3inch DP/Apexi GT Spec Exhaust and holding 15psi in all gears with the stock turbo without a boost controller.

I don't have the CRX cluster anymore. I have a 92-95 civic cluster.

So yesterday I checked the codes and was getting a pressure switch and intake air temp code, so I did the bypass for the pressure switch and the code went away. I checked the intake air temp and it was burned. Now I have to go to the junk yard and find one.

Can I use the single cam intake air temp sensor?

Sorry dude I got no idea....unless something is causing them to just 'burn up' I swapped one from a 1.5l single overhead into my b16 two months ago and have not had a problem since.
Sucks that did not solve your problem...go to the dealer and see if there is a difference in the sensors between the different motors.

Well I compared the type r sensor to the single cam one and I do see a slight difference, so I will just see if I buy one for a B-series motor N see if that works. Thanks for your help.

use a newer cluster that uses electronic vss.

As I stated above I already have a 95 civic body harness, engine harness, & the cluster all together.

sorry. there was some kind of issue when i posted it - the posts before it weren't there? i don't know. I wouldn't have posted it if all the posts were there. I just read that you changed the cluster over already.
