Default Buying Prelude

I'm thinking of getting a 5th Gen Prelude.

Is there anything i should know about the cars before buying one?

Decent daily driver?
Hows gas?
Any common problems i should look into?

Tyronne,
Thanks

4th gens are better!

Great daily driver......I am getting ~27mpg combined and haven't had to really spend money on the car.

If you want an automatic, don't get any Prelude. They aren't for you.

Stick with a no-***** granny-tranny Civic.

I'm just messing with you man......still feel discriminated against with the 5th gen. They're NOT 6'6" friendly.....it falls into a class with 99% of the cars out there

Haha; Granny Tranny

The weak-link is the trans, and may make you hate Preludes. Anyone I know that started with an Auto Prelude doesn't drive a Prelude anymore.

You couldn't pay me to drive that death trap unless it was caged and I was 5 "pointed" in a Recaro Pro-Racer seat with a fire-supression system........

BTW; I think the HF had a solid rear axle.

The auto in the 5G Prelude has an extremely high failure rate. It was a new transmission design, featuring tiptronic capabilities. It will die.

and what exactly is wrong with a manual transmission?

In terms of fun, its the difference between a Reliable Low 15sec car and a Less Reliable Mid16sec car.

5th gens are pretty cool but there not great gas savers for being a honda.. about 19 city/24 hwy. It's great if you want thrill, even the autos. It sips even more gas when you play around with the tiptronic haha.

Everyone has their own opinion about the Manual vs. Auto-triptronic tranny. I have had mine for a year now and love the hell out of it. And its my first automatic car (4 previous cars were 5-speeds). Just make sure the previous owner took care of the tranny and soo do you, then you wont run into so many issues with it. For my 'Lude, no tranny slips at all and my '99 has 118xxx miles on all original tranny internals. No slipping what-so-ever. Plus, I didn't get this prelude for the tranny, I got it for the looks and the saweet *** drive....thats the best part about it. I'm sure you'll love whatever you end up buying...Good luck with your decision.

i still would not get an auto. you are asking for a serious headache and a black hole in your wallet.

on that note all 98-02 accords also have common problems. usually caused by the converter. if you demand an automatic honda for daily then find a pristine civic of any year or an 03+ 2.4 accord.
