1998 Prelude - Key Issues (lost them)
Hello
We own a 1998 Prelude which we purchase used about 2 years ago. It had 2 keys. In a recent move, we lost one key, and it looks as if my wife just lost the other.
We made a duplicate key from the plastic AAA emergency key that she had in her wallet, but it does not work (they turn in the ignition, but the green key light on the dash lights up and the car does not start). It appears that the original keys are "chipped" and must be ordered special.
Re-keying the car will cost over $2000 (more than the worth of the car). We have no idea what to do about this. Any ideas?
Any feedback is appreciated.

You could get a different immobilizer and ignition lock from a wrecked car. But really, easiest and quickest bet is to bite the bullet and get it done.
2000 bucks, wow that is very sad to hear. I'd look into removing the immobilzer unit if possible. I think I need to contact the dealer I got mine from and get some more keys.
Will Honda make backups of these keys?
Might wanna check out some other threads on this some people say you can do some desoldering to the ecu (which is easier than you think just try a practice run on a dead ecu first)

I just did a google search and also found this and its fairly cheap scroll down theres also a 1997-2001 honda immobilizer for prelude as well about 19 bucks but may only work with remote start system:

I think the dealer is misinformed, read here -

Well...
I just went to the dealer, and he said that I need the "red key" to get a new master made. We never had a red key, so we are screwed. This dealer wants to charge us about $700 for the replacement and re-keying of the ignition.
He also said that he knows someone who may be interested on buying the damned thing. Who knows - we just need a car that works.
He also mentioned that we may want to talk to Car Stereo installers about bypassing the immobilizer because they deal with car circuitry all the time. I'll be following up on that.
Are these hard to install? All I see in the forums are mentions of the boxes and links to them (thanks for those, by the way), but no mention of actual installation instructions or how-to's for soldering. I'm pretty good with a soldering iron, so I'd love to take a crack at it.
By the way - we never had remote start functionality on this car, so if that breaks it's no big loss.
I'm willing to purchase a kit that circumvents the immobilizer right now if I can get any info on the right one to get and whether or not it has instructions.
Thanks again everyone.

DAMN
I thought it said $200, not $2,000. Thats nuts.
I might have a full setup I can sell you for cheap, PM me and I will get you a price. I happen to be parting out a full car. Keys, door locks, ign cylinder, immobilizer, even the trunk lock. I'm waiting on a reply from someone else interested and then I can let you know when I know.

OMG, go the cheap rout. Buy a few Chipped blank keys from ebay, get them cut out with the key that you have that dose not work, then tow car to dealer and have the dealer program the ebay keys for $75 and done. This will cost you no more then $150 depending if you will tow the car or a towing company... Good luck
Mafia: Apparently, I cannot just get blank chipped keys because the chips have to match the car.
jlude09: I may take you up on that, but we will try to find a way to circumvent or disable the immobilizer first.
Still looking for someone who has experience with the immobilizer and removing or disabling it. Anyone?
Thanks

Get a P28 or P72 ecu and put a stock H22 map on it, that will entirely circumvent the immobilizer. Beyond that, just get a couple keys (any keys) from ebay cut. This should cost you less than $150. Contact one of the companies in this directory. Make sure to tell them you're not tuning, just explain your situation and need for a replacement P28 or P72 ecu with a stock H22 map.

hi everyone, this is steve's wife who lost the key. steve is reading the bed time story to the kid, so i'm continuing the research. first off, thanks for your comments and suggestions. second one if for vinuneuro:
i'm assuming P28 or P72 is the model for the ECU. Can you tell me what the H22 is? Thanks again.

Wow all this is making me wish I kept my tuning kit I bought from xenocron when I had the turbo teg lol. If you get the P72 and go on PGMFI.org forums you'll probably find someone local with the stuff to get the map on there.
Ok, I had a simmiler problem and it worked for me. When you get a blank chipped key and get it cut out and take it to the dealer with the car, They reprogram that new key for Your car.... BTW if you go for a Obd1 commputer you will need a obd2a to obd1 harnnes, and if you have emissions in your state good luck pasing them with the obd1 ecu.

Boom there ya go. If your from Canada like I am this is about the best route rather than paying the scummy dealership 600-1000 dollars for some monkey to work on your car. I lost all my keys for my car and went with these guys. But, if your in a big rush maybe go to the dealership. itll take a couple weeks. I have other vehicles so it wasn't a big problem
