Default How to check Tranny Fluid

I need to check my transmission fluid level. I think it might be a little low or a little too high since the tranny is acting up randomly. I dont have a dipstick, there is just a cap over where its supposed to go. So how do I check it? Everyone I talk to has the same thing, nobody has got a dipstick.

If its a manual tranny there's a bolt on the side of the transmission you have to take out and then you put a hose in there and slowly pour oil in until it flows back out and then you simply screw the bolt back in and it should be at the correct level(make sure you do this with the car on level ground).

Cannot be too high. If youa have a maunal B there is no dipstick. There are two bolt on the right side on of the tranny, a low on with a square concave, that is the drain bolt. look direclty avove it, there is a 17mm Hex bolt, that is the filler. All you need to do is fill it up to the filler bolt, but the dealer must pump it in cause there was much more in there, when I drained mine. It does slightly explain this in the owners manual if you have it.

If its automatic there's a dipstick with a yellow handle down under in the intake pipe area.

its manual. How do I know when its above that hex bolt? I pull out the bolt? and then when it starts flowing out of there its at the right level?

It'll pour out. Yes if it is pouring out just close it and the level is adequate. If that does happen check the clutch fluid and clutch slave cylindar, some times it leaks. You can bleed it, it takes dot3 brake fluid the same in you brake system. Mine siezed, and another leaked so bad if the car sat an hour, clutch would not even activate, could't even start the car, I had to get a new clutch slave.

Well I just put a new throwout bearing in last weekend. We took out the tranny so I drained the fluid. We lost a bit while draining it so I assumed it was about half a QT, so I went to the dealer and bought a QT and put half in. But the last couple of days the tranny has been acting pretty weird. Sometimes its really rough shifting gears, it made some noises when I was starting from a stop, and today it didnt want to let me downshift on the highway, i had to really fight with it to put the gear in 3rd or 4th.

so how do you fill it from the side of the tranny? I filled mine from the TPS spot every time. And its filled with Honda MTF. When we took out the tranny and I drained the fluid I put it into a clean bag and put it back in the tranny, since the oil only has like 4k miles on it max. I will check it tomorrow to see if its over filled or under filled.

Did you replace the throwout bearing or use a whole new clutch kit? If you replaced the whole clutch, you may just be breaking it in.

You have to put a hose in the hole, put a funnel at the top of the hose and fill it until it pours out.

got a whole new slave cylider from Oriely's for $12 and been going strong for 4 months now.

Also OP could just take the filler bolt out and fill it up from the speed sensor hole till it runs out the filler bolt, so the only thing you really need is a long *** funnel

i think im going to do that, because im pretty sure its leaking atm, so I need to figure out where its leaking from and fix it and then put more in it. I have a super long funnel that ive used to put fluid in it before, its like 2.5FT long.

If im reading this correctly you drained your transmission and only got 1/2 of a qt out of it and only added 1/2 qt back in it?
If this is correct, you are 1 1/2qt low on fluid. that is your problem, and you need to get the level up to ~2qt before you do major damage to the transmission.

no. Idk how much I got out of it because I emptied it into a brand new trash bag so that it stayed clean. The I told my friend to hold the bag and he set it down and some came out of the bag. So I assumed that i lost about a 1/2 QT based on what i saw on the floor. So I bought a QT and put half of it back in with all the rest of the fluid from the bag.

And I dont have 4 level jack stands to put the car on, and my driveway is on a little bit of a angle so thats not possible :/

Well if you plan on working on your car by yourself a lot, I'd highly suggest buying 4 jack stands. They're not that expensive and it makes things a hell of a lot safer and more convenient.

Also, a trash bag to hold your used oil? Of course it's going to leak out! You should be able to just funnel it back into a used bottle or container of some sort. Come on now! Haha, good luck man!

seems to me your creating a big mess.
You dont know what ur doing.
Your trying to save money and cant read or follow instructions very well.
and what the hell are you doing putting oil in bags and only taking out half quarts LOL what the ***........????????????/
honda tranny fluid costs 7$... r u poor? who saves oil.. do u wash the bottles too and keep them for silveneers... ? ?
you own a car and you wont spend money on it. very sad

How hard is it to get in your car drive it somewhere FLAT and park the thing...
put a jack under the passenger side and raise the jack till the tire comes off ground and remove tire.
Lower the jack a little bit to get the car back even. if its off a little bit it doesnt matter.(if u cant eye this you need to kill urself NOW)

Take out your fill bolt.

Put the funnel hose in and put the damn transmission fluid in the funnel.

When it pours out all over the ground out of the filler hole your funnel is in, your finished.

take funnel hose out and put the screw back in. raise car put tire. lower car. end of story.

takes 15 minutes, less time then it took you to understand and post 10 posts.. i mean honestly.. theres owners manuals for a reason
No need to search the internet on transmission fluid changes esp if u wont even go buy the oil instead of using recycled oil in bags ??? LOL
add a half of a fresh cold can of coke to a week old warm can of coke drink it and let me know how it tastes..

theres stupid then theres common sense. really.

also whoever said take off all tires and use 4 jacks stands just to change tranny fluid is the biggest retard ever and shuld stop posting immediatly..

your ****ing dumb. I built my car, with the help of a couple buddies and my dad who used to work on muscle cars. Converted it to manual, swapped the motor 2 times, boosted it, etc. There is no point in ****ing wasting Tranny oil that has 3k miles on it. Especially when its $7 a quart. Only taking out half quarts? Are you dumb? I took out all of it and then when I told my friend to hold the bag he set it down and it started leaking out oil, it looked like there was a half QT on the floor so thats what I figured I had lost. And I already figured out how I am going to do it. I can just raise the car on the passenger side, take out the bolt and then lower the car back down. Then Put in oil where the VSS is and when it starts comming out then its filled.

Nobody said that. Ever. So maybe you should stop posting because of your inability to read, spell and comprehend

OP, glad to hear you've got a game plan. It's really a simple thing to do, so good luck!
