Good luck getting the K bar'd in cali.

IMO K's are overrated. Its a great motor but for the initial cost of the swap plus fabrication, you can have an H2B with cash left over.

I would do an H2B and leave it.

Why start with a swap when you plan on another one down the road?

Keep your D series until you have money to buy a K swap. No use in swapping in a B18 when you are wanting to go K.

Much harder. Hence why I say the cost plus fabrication is NOT WORTH IT. If you are asking if its harder than a B series you need to do more research. Not to mention a K is much harder to pass in cali than a B swap.

What is it exactly that is drawing you to the k?

Because its "baller status" or you just want decent power and torque vs the weak D?

If its power you want, build a B with the money you could save, or the H2B like I said. You can get an H22 for less than either and makes more power and torque than the B's

if you want something that isnt going to burn a hole through your wallet, then a k swap isnt the answer.
