1996 Honda Accord Stalling Problem, Any Help Appreciated
Hi everyone,
I am newbie to the forum, and here is my problem. I have a 1996 Honda Accord 4 cylinder VTech, that has not given me any problems until about 1 month ago. The main problem I have with the car is that when I step on the gas to accelerate, the car does not move, or does so very slowly for about 5-10 seconds and then all of a sudden (since the pedal is all the way down), power will resume and the car will screech off. My first inclination was that the transmission is going out, but that was confirmed not to be the problem by Transmission Inc. as the rmp tick does not spike when I step on the gas (it moved accordingly with the speed indicated). The problem also happens when I am in motion. When I step on the gas to accelerate, the car hesitates for about maybe 5-10 seconds and then appears to catch on and then speed up. I have checked the wiring, distributor cap, and ignition components and everything checks out okay. My next inclination was that it could possibly be an O2 sensor causing the stalling, however, I was told that this is unlikely. Additionally, the problem is not consistent and happens here and there.
Any help will be appreciated.

Hi,
Thanks for your quick response. I apologize, but yes, the check engine light is on. I went to advance auto and they checked the code for me, and it appears to be a code for the o2 sensor error (I believe bank 1, sensor 1). However, since the sensors are rather expensive themselves, I wanted to check if that was the root cause of the stalling problem. The stalling problem actually began a year ago, but only happened for about a week then and went completely away. The check engine light came on about 3 weeks back, shortly before the stalling began. However, given that the o2 sensor was not exhibiting any problems last year when I first experienced the stalling problem, I sidelined it as not related to the issue. However, my new knowledge regarding fixing the car may have blinded me. Could this be related to the problem? I am not sure how the o2 sensor would affect engine power, and stalling though. Please advise, thank you
Thanks again.

Check through this list and see if you can find the specific code that is occuring.

Thanks for your reply. I took a look at the timing and it was timed as expected. I checked out the forum suggested by lunarone and found the code and hopefully the problem. I replaced the O2 sensor located in bank 1, before the catalytic converter. I am yet to experience the problem since the replacement and will update with any new information within a week. Thanks a lot for your help :-)
