Default Buying a supercharged car?

Hi, I found an ad on kijiji for a GSR with 185,000 km on the engine. It's already supercharged and he's asking for 4,500. That price for a supercharged vehicle sounds like a fishy to me, let alone a GSR.

Now what are your guys takes on buying a car that has already been supercharged? A mechanic once told me that if I wanted a car to last, don't buy a car with a turbo on it (I'm assuming same goes with a supercharger).

This is was the seller said when I emailed him:
"YES ORIGINAL GSR WITH AEM COLD AIR INTAKE, FUEL RAIL AND CAM GEARS GREEDY E MANAGE COMPUTER AND FULL EXHAUST WITH DC HEADERS, CROWER CAM SHAFTS JACKSON RACING SUPERCHARGER, ENERGY SUSPENSION ENGINE MOUNTS, ADJUSTABLE 1 PIECE KONI SUSPENSION, TWO SETS OF RIMS AND TIRES (SUMMER AND WINTER BOTH IN GREAT SHAPE SUMMERS ARE BRAND NEW) MINT INTERIOR, DVD DECK, HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP AND SO ON"

(I will try and get pictures up)

What do you guy's think? What should I look out for when test driving a super charged vehicle?

bring a compression tester with the cash. as long as the engine isn't shot that's a screaming deal

How do you run Emanage on a JRSC car?? Most people would have gone with either the factory FMU or and EMS like Crome. I would second the compression test suggestion...this thing might be on its last legs

nice mounts, a real aero fpr, konis. is it possible the car has a salvage title and he needs a cash buyer? those normally keep the kids away since they can't get loans.

That's good, is there anything wrong with salvaged cars? I lost a 95 GSR with 90k on the engine for 4gs, this car might help me cope with it. LOL

There's really nothing wrong with salvage titles other than people thinking "Man, it's probably been into a wreck yadada", Carfax it and see how the accident occurred and where at. If it's in a bad shape and salvage, let it go haha.

IMOH, i'd rather get a stock Integra and just Supercharge it myself, because you never know if they did anything wrong with that car. Sure it will cost you extra cash doing it yourself, but it's always quality first.

Salvage titles are worth less because often there is frame damage or something that you can't immediately see. Ask for the VIN and run a carfax on it too...if they are at all hesitant to provide it, then you should be equally hesitant to consider it seriously.

But yeah...E-Manage, seriously? And it looks like a narrowband A/F, which would point to the owner maybe not really being aware of how things should be done right. If it were me, I would be reluctant to consider that, even for the price. You could end up putting 3 grand into it to get it running right on a good tuning program, in which case it isn't such a deal. Not saying that's the case, but you never know.

How would I know when I go check it out?

Also, to do the carfax. I heard there is a free way to do a simple report. Then you can pay for the full report.

wrong, but then again crap like this keeps people away from them and lets those who are smarter snab deals. what salvage means is the insurance sold it as a total loss. there are more than a few integras that had interior thefts that were totaled. i actually have one. the car has never been in an accident in its life yet has a branded title. it was actually stolen from a dealership in 99, recovered and put back together by the dealer and sold again. what the salvage mostly effects is loan value. also, as others have stated, make sure it's not a hard wreck recovery. total titles can mean a variety of things. then again, many clean title cars have been wrecked hard and back yard repaired. remember, if someone doesn't have full coverage and wrecks their car, then repairs it, that title will still be clean.

also, explain how you spend 3g in tuning. an obd1 ecu is $100 and a hondata s100 is $195, $250 for a wideband and $300 for two hours of tuning and dyno time still only equals 845. maybe throw in a jdm replacement engine for $1500 and you're still at 2345 for a new engine, the ecu and the tuning

I didn't say that they ALWAYS have frame damage..I said they often do. If the carfax shows that it wasn't in a major accident, then it's probably no big deal. Hence why I said to run the VIN. And even in private sale, they usually do not sell for the price of an equivalent car w/o a salvage title, because there is always a bigger chance at a surprise down the road. The 'smarter' buys don't always end up being the cheapest in the end, speaking from the perspective of someone who purchased a car that seemingly was built right, but has cost me way more than I could have anticipated.

And I didn't say 3g's on tuning...I said to get it running right. That might be engine work, tuning hardware and time (which can run $500 for just the time), or it might be suspension work/ general maintenance. My point is that if that car is showing signs of questionable work or lack of research by the owner (to me, the Narrowband and E-Manage point to that), then you might be buying something that hasn't been properly built and taken care of.

Just my opinion, take it or leave it. Not everything I say is going to apply every time man, but from my own experiences, that's my take on it.

I don't know if this adds to the situation, but the guy who emailed me is the owner of that detailing shop in the background. I don't know if it's his or if he's selling it to someone. To me though that can mean 2 things, either he took really good care of it or he's covering up some things as he has the equipment and supplies to easily do it.

What does that mean? It's not supercharged? How does that thing reach 240HP? (That's what the owner claimed in his ad)

This is why this car IS for me

It'll be my introduction to boosting. That's why I came here to ask about it. Sorry if I offended by asking.

just seriously DO your homework before you buy

actually, f'k it, i'll help you. here's what i would do

1. google supercharger, read up on the different styles, pros/cons
2. get a compression and leak down tester
3. use the above mentioned when you see the car
4. don't F'kin forget to unplug the distributor when you do the test
4a. buy a new coil if you ignore #4
5. drive the car and wind it up, check transmission gears for grinding
6. do a burn out in the guys driveway when you buy the car
7. just kidding about number 6
8. don't rice the car

Thanks for the info, I will do my research today.

I asked the guy for the VIN and he said I can get it when I go to see the car, so I don't know why he's hesitant to giving it to me. I can't think of what people can do with VINs, lol. I live an hour from this guy. So I'm gonna just have to hope this will be worth my time.

often the case with total titles, if you have the vin you can run carfax and it will show up. if it is a salvage it's still not a bad deal at all as long as it wasn't a major impact. you just need to figure out why it was issued a title brand.
