Default Scrape off oxidation, of use treatment?

I live in south florida, and as u all know it gets HOT..!! With almost 20 years of sun abuse to my cars paint the oxidation affect is DEFINITELY taking affect..!! I had my debit card out an just kinda scraped across my roof with it and the oxidized/baked off clear coat comes off leaving a dull teal underneath. I'm not to sure but doesn't the oxidation occur from clear coat aging..? Anyways, should I clar bay, etc or should it just scrape off what I can and re-clear? motor skills < paint skills <~~~ hook me up lol..

go to parts store buy some 1500 and 2000 grit sand paper(make sure it can be used for wetsanding), rubbing/polishing compound, and a good wax/sealer treatment for plastic(preferablly made for head lights). clean the headlight with soap and water very good, lightly sand with 1500grit and plenty of water be carefull no to dig into the plactic, then repeat with 2000grit and plenty of water, wipe dry it should be completely dull at this point, then proceed with the rubbing/polishing compound to bring a good clear shiny finish, lastetly finish with the was/sealer. this should clear up those cloudy headlights in about 30 mins of your time. good luck

Kinda sounds like you're beyond oxidation, but that you're clear has peeled off completely. Post up a picture...

what i would do is get all that stuff off till you see the dull teal then hit it with some polish and wax it but if your clear is coming of as well then im not quit sure

Yeah I think you're clear is coming off...that's the reason it's dull underneath. There really is no point in polishing it, because it won't polish unless it's clear coat. More than likely you need the roof repainted, but I hold off on saying that for sure until the picture!

yeah the white oxidation is what I believe is the clear coat just cooked off from the lovely florida sun... sorry didnt get a chance to snap any pics today tomorrow is 100% tho... what im tryna find out is what can i use to scrape off just the oxidation/old clear coat without scraping off the teal underneath as well... worst case scenario i just take it all off and paint my roof flat black for now...

The correct way to get it off would be to sand it and recoat it...just having a flat color (whether just the teal, or flat black) really won't protect it very well since it won't shed water.

Wow, yeah that clear is toast. There really is no way to sand the clear without messing up the teal. You will have to put down both the color and the clear to get that looking right.

so what grit would u recommend sanding with..?? sorry, I'm more mechanical than paint & body smart... I was just thinking sanding and repainting the roof, hood, and trunk black an maybe reclearing them myself... maybe just rattle can until I can save up to get a paint job "full time college student living off loans so im about as broke as it gets right now"... thanks for your input..

Yeah I hear you, I was all about the mechanical and just recently started getting into paint and bodywork. I would check out the sticky at the top of the P&B forum, because what you're doing is basically the same as a repaint.

Just to get you started though, I would sand with 320 (on at least a 12 in block, in an X pattern), 400, then finish with 600 grit. After that it's ready for base/clear.

Good luck!
