I have a 97 Ex Civic Coupe that i want to boost. Should i go with an Acura LS motor or a B16 motor?

sohc's like boost too, and can cost less than a swap if you already got the motor. also will be faster then stock swaps

 

I was told that i would get more hp with an LS motor than a stock D series motor. Thats what i have now is a stock D series motor. By the way "JDM 4 Life"!!!

 

yea, but boosting your sohc will have you smiling everyday and have a couple thousand more bucks in your pocket

 

LS1 easy they are less then a K and lots of them crack 4 digit HP #s

 

stock for stock, yes. but, boosted the D would be more reliable. plus you already have it...

you could build and boost a D series for about the same price you would pay to buy your stock ls and boost it

 

I'd totally say an LS B18B engine is the best to boost for what it is. Yes, you can boost any honda engine, but for the price and performance, the B18 really does the job well. It's a higher flow engine than a d series, and is stronger too!

I'd boost my z6 if I had another swap to go right back in cuz I know the D is pretty tired and needs a rebuild so if I boosted then "see ya lata" but it'd still be fun for the most part

 

i say boost the LS for sure over the boosted SOHC i had a LS wit light mods and gsr tranny and was beatin turbo SOHC and LS are verry cheap if you look around i got my full swap for 800 bucks and the LS tranny is made with long gears so perfect for boost

 

my understanding from talking about this is indeed more cost effective to boost b18b/a... you willhave more hp/torque with a boosted B than a D... however, boosted D's a quite fun too... it's up to you. THere a multiple threads on HT that discuss and even price list the cost of every parts for both B and D... look it up and see how much you'd spend out of pocket.

if you stick with the d-series then you'll have to build the whole thing if you want to see any more than about 220whp reliably. if you swap a stock b18a/b in there you can do closer to 320whp reliably. of course you have to factor in the cost of swapping an ls versus just sticking with the d and saving all that money. i figure it will probably cost about as much to decently build a d and boost it for 300whp, as it would cost you to swap in a stock ls and put out the same hp. now if around 200whp is fine with you then dont swap, boost your stock motor, and don't bother pulling it out to build it.

 

i have a d16y7, i've been thinking about boosting later down the road when i do a stick-conversion. From all the information i've gathered up.. you can boost a stock d16 up to 8psi and get 200whp or even more.. but than if you want more power [200-300whp], you'll still have a lot money leftover after buying some new pistons, rods, etc versus swapping for an ls and boosting it.

 

This thread is stupid because its all a matter of opinion. Obviously there are constraints in this question...whether the question is, 'what is the best of these in stock form?' or 'which is going to give the best bang for my buck?'

As for stock engines, the best bet would be a GSR if you're staying B. The general rule is that a stock B will be safe in the mid 300whp range. The GSR has a better flowing head than the LS and has more displacement than the B16 and doesn't cost as much as an ITR. The D series is limited to about 250whp in stock form since the rods are puny.

If you have a D and are looking to build a turbo setup, your best bet is to build the D with a set of Eagle Rods and Vitara pistons. That'll be a decent low-to-mid 400whp engine build and doesn't cost much to put together.

With each engine combo, there are pros and cons. The GSR, especially one with an LS crank, is a great platform for a higher hp street/strip car, but is more expensive than the D. The D, although cheaper, has less displacement and a worse flowing head which limits power and adds more lag. Once you factor in your budget and your skill level (for building engines and so forth), this question will become less hazy

 

you have the D, might as well save yourself the money of another engine and swapping it in. D series is a good strong engine. already low compression so you can add a decent amount of boost and not worry about running premium or higher fuel. id suggest a rebuild on the motor though. get everything checked out(crank, block, head, rods, pistons, etc) rebuild back to stock.....maybe a lil stronger, then boost it. if the assembly is done right, you get a good tune, and keep up with regular maint......you should have a PDQ car that will last a good while

 

I boosted a z6 once... well... it is now trash. So im making a boosted LS.. I'll pull off more power and only spend 700$ for the total swap inlcuding motor, mounts, linkage etc.

Ls is best motor for boost stock imo

 

all it costs to boost a D would be about 1,500 if you look for the parts (and thats WITH a tune)

we dont reallyt alk about the other aspects of swapping, if you wanna go LS you need to buy mounts (which sell for ~250$ i think), etc, theres alot of unknown stuff you'll end up needing. then add on the other 1,700-2,000 for a turbo and tune

for ~1,500 turbo + optional 4-500 for build, your D can be pushing ~300whp, maybe 400

for 1700-2,000 turbo + an LS complete build (which will average around 1,000$ = a 400-500whp ride
