Default CR-X Noob, please help?

Alright guys, as the title implies...I'm a complete noob to CR-X's and recently I have found one for sale for 800 dollars. It's a 1990 CR-X HF. I have done a little bit of research into the differences between the HF, DX, and Si. Now I still haven't really found what I was looking for. The car is in rough shape and needs a lot of work.

Now, I have had a lot of people support me and a lot of people against me. So I figured I would ask guys who have actually been there and done that. What I'm really wanting to know, is if I am wasting my time and getting in over my head with this one? Or is this actually a good idea to put a little money into. Like I said guys, I have no experiences with CR-X's so please take it easy on me. =\

Additional note: No that is not the gas tank in the back, and it is dinged up a lot but it has a clean title and has not been wrecked. Also it has a b18 swap from a 96 teg in it with a 93 transmission.

I would say stay away since you really don't have experience with the car. I would never buy someone else's project.

Save yourself a migraine if you're not mechanically inclined bro.

Looks like its been beat to hell. You wouldn't be putting a "little" money into this at all.

Hm, well I'm starting school soon for Automotive Technology and I was looking for something cheap that I could work with while I'm in school. It does have a lot of body rust but I was told that it wouldn't be too much to fix. I own a 1994 Honda Prelude AT right now which really got me interested in tuning and whatnot. But I wanted a 5 speed to work with instead. And like I said I found this one for 800 and thought it was pretty cheap, didn't know exactly a figure on how much it would cost to restore. Currently from what I know, it needs a new ignition since he has like rigged the battery up behind the passenger seat and to crank it you have to turn the key on, hold the clutch, and touch the positive with what looks like a ground wire. And he said third gear has recently started grinding. I've been reading up on them about base torque and hp and such. I never really got interested in the CR-X until I found this one. I was told that it is probably going to be around 2000 dollars worth of repairs. Which make me wonder whether it is worth it or not since I have found some Si's for 3000.

Not worth it, 3rd grinding is a sign of of the being beat to hell. If you want to build a car and call it your own, you shouldnt be getting someone elses project.

True, but buying something like that, you never know what your getting. Everyone says that there chassis has 1898958945 miles on it while the motor happens to have 8000 miles after the rebuild.

Yeah he said the engine has 130k on it, and the car has 204k on the chassis.

You have any suggestions on finding just general info about the CR-X on these forums? It has kinda caught my attention. Also, any suggestions on another potential project that I might find easily? I'm just starting with the tuning thing and I really want advice without being laughed at like I have on other forums.

I gotcha, really just need to look anywhere. I would never buy a car from a kid. Try to get a crx from an older person who has owned it for quite sometime. As for general info, what are you looking at knowing? Search feature works wonders.

get yourself a big cup of coffee and read the FAQ thread at the top of this forum. More than plenty of info to get you going in the right direction.

I want to know what people have done to theirs that have worked so I can look into making a build if I ever stumble across one. And I'm a kid myself. I don't quite know what to do other than the usual additions, like headers, intakes, stuff like that. I'm not looking to go into crazy customization. Just something I can enjoy while driving regularly and have fun in every now and then ya know? I thought about getting a 92-96 Civic, maybe a EG hatch. I have also looked into another 92-96 Prelude. I have considered a del Sol, and now the 88-91 CR-X has caught my attention. But I can never find anything in my price range, or stock. And if I do find them stock, usually whoever has it doesn't want to sell it.

I would probably just stay with your car. You have a project there, first thing, 5sp swap. But ya, good things come to those who wait.

I've been told a 5sp swap will run me around 2 grand, and that's if I do everything myself. I have thought about that. This is my 'lude, not to pretty on the eyes but she is reliable.

looks clean. And research into the 5sp swap. I couldnt see it being $2000 when you could swap the whole motor and tranny for $2000.

Other than a few dings from parking lot ********, it is in good shape. I had to replace the cv boot on the driver rear when I bought it, and I am installing a brand new ac compressor next week. I think I might just stick to what I have. Thanks a lot man, I'm going to mosey on over to the Prelude forums and see what I can dig up. Cheers.

Why wouldnt you want to buy anything stock? Stock is the new "IN" thing..STOCK exterior, STOCK interior..motor mods and more..but my point is why not get it stock and go from there and build it to your specs..even if you dnt knw much about rexes youll eventually get the hang of it. Try STOCK and see if it works out..we ALL started out that way!!

Dosen't look to bad so what if it needs a couple of fenders, some signal lights, and paint i live on the east coast of canada (newfoundland) and its hard to find a CRX that isen't rusted away i say go for it it will be a learning experience. The ignition is easy to fix its just a plug for the wires and some pins to beat out when you get another one. I have two crx's one is just a shell (1990 dx) for the monent has the front smashed up from a recent accident, the other is a 88 si with a 91 B18 running nitrous as well as most all bolt ons and i also have a 90 dx hatch with a B16, these are fun little cars so make it a project for school you will have a lot more fun with this than the prelude, and if you need any information on it feel free to ask.

i do want to find something stock, i didnt say i didn't. thats what im looking for. but i tried to get the guy to lower it to 500 cuz of the heavy body work and the fact that it needs a new tranny. he said no, so i told him just to forget it anyway.
