1991 Accord auto lock question.
I just purchased this 1991 Accord off my nephew and to put the car in gear you have to take and put the key in by the auto shifter to take it out of park. Seems pointless, I never seen anything like it. Is there a way to like unlock it so I dont have to insert the key to get it out of park? Trying to get the car ready for a work car for the lil lady. Also seems I have no brake lights and reverse lights. I installed new bulbs and checked all the fuses and cant seem to find the problem. Any help with these problems is greatful. This is my first Accord.
for the locking on the shifter. Put the key in and turn it to on but don't start it. push the brake down and see if you hear a click coming from the shifter, if not then the auto lock safty thing is not working. Check the fuses for it and wiring going to it, its under the console under the shifter. For the rear part check the wiring in the back the connectors are up on the left side of the inner trunk by the seat. Hope this helps some.
If I don`t hear the click how do I go about fixing it? I`m going to chexk it first thing in the morning but was wondering what steps I may need to take to fix it. Just trying to get it road worthy so my wife can give me my car back lol.
It's a dual function switch. It's first (and primary) function is to operate the brake lamps. It's second is to activate the shifter lockout solenoid which you appear to have run up against.
It fails in one of two ways.
Misadjusted
Mechanical failure.
It is often the victim of someone's errant foot. They aren't built to stand up to someone's size 12 ddd gunboats

Yep it was the switch thanks. Had to jump the plug and worked fine. Went and installed a new switch all is good now. Appreciate it thanks guys.

Thanks for letting us know what you found (and the kind words)
