The best ls block is the lowest milage, cheapest one you can find. There is no difference otherwise besides a few different sensors.

wouldent the bottom end of lets say the b18c5 be a little better then that of the b18a1 which doesent handle near the rpms? i would also amagine they balance the rotating assmbly to a further degree also

i would have to say there are only 2 blocks that i like imo(without stepping into the k series topic) but id have to say the ls series from a 92-94, and the b20 series from the 96-2000. NO PRELUDE B20'S

What are your goals OP?

ls vtec or ls uses the same block....

As said before it's all in where sensors are comparing years of the blocks.

Some cases a different block might suit you better.

its true. the c5 is a hand-built engine. but if you had a type r bottom end you wouldn't be making an ls-v, you'd just be reassembling an engine that was already vtec to start with. the idea of an ls-v is you take a non-vtec lower revving block b18a1/b18b1 and build it to handle the higher rev's and modify it accordingly to support the vtec head.

Just make sure you run a brand new O.E.M. Oil pump a GSR girdle and get a Golden eagle or Datum1 LSV oil line kit. Dont forget to buy a new GSR/B16 water pump and a GSR belt.
I also have the Arp LSVtec Studs. No problem at all.
