I have a 2001 Odyssey EX/navigation. It was built in Canada and purchased in Kansas. My catalytic converter has gone bad (again) and I need to replace it so I can get my vehicle inspected. I was told when I bought it that it was California emissions, but I live in NC and don't really need to be up to those standards or spend $1000 on a catalytic converter. Will a regular 49 state catalytic converter fit on my car and will it do any damage to the engine if I put one on?

 

grab one off of ebay, it should do for a basic inspection

or you could do the $5 fix. You buy a sparkplug defowler, drill it out, and put it in between the cat and the secondary o2 senser. They should be doing the new type of emissions where it is the obd2 plug in, instead of the sniffer, so you will pass.

 

Cats are covered under the mandatory 8 year, 80k mile extended emissions component warranty.

Take it to the dealer, have them fix it.

 

I have 200,009 miles, no more warranty.

 

you can get the aftemarket cat and most are universal so you wil have to get it welded in. just make sure it is an obd2 and you will be fine...

you can actually get the one for the car aftermarket for $160 ad advanced, BOLT IN, or fix it for $5 like I explained already

 

the problem with the defouler is that it will work for a little while, then go right back to setting a check eng light and cause the computer to start going to the richer side of its preset maps to keep itself safe. I have seen them go for months without re-setting a cel, and I have seen them go for about 10 mins before it sets the cel.
my advice, fix the damn thing right and your vehicle will be much better for it.


and by the way, I'm not sure about just bolting in an aftermarket cat from advanced auto parts, since it would not be very feasable for them to carry a "bolt-in" cat specifically for your vehicle.

 

they do carry them, On hand.... and the defowlers never "go bad". I have used them for YEARS on test pipes/gutted cats, on race cars and non race cars, with NO ISSUES.

 

obviously you don't understand what the O2 in the cat does. and I never said the defouler will go bad, it will only fool the O2 for a period of time.
Example: got a buddy with an '07 SI 4dr. he put a header on it and deleted the cat. He put a defouler in the bung then put the O2 sensor in the defouler. the car runs fine until the O2 figures out there is no cat due to the higher than usual Nx gasses going by and it will set a cel for p0420=catalyst deterioration. I have seen it go for as long as 3 months and it didn't even make it out of my stall at the shop once before it turned on the cel.

I know it doesnt go bad, I was refering to something you said, anyway, I have never had an issue with them ever...on a honda. The race car thing was before hondata.....so now it's just on street cars without hondata, or that actually want to stay obd2 to pass inspection legally.

So the longest you have EVER seen one last for was 3 months?

 

...before setting a p0420 code for catalyst deterioration. you can reset the cel and they will be fine until the O2 doesn't see what it wants to.

 

i have a 2001 van also, the cat went out at 100000 miles a local mech put one on for me and a week later the cel came on again with same problem, i asked where he got the converter and it came from honda, he put a second one on it with same result, and a thrird, mine has the california standards as well , honda had to order one from california before the vehicle was right. i could not get it inspected here in texas, id be careful here if i were you, another thing the local mech did the job for under 300.00 dealer wanted more than 1000.00 . a real mess but finally resolved
