How much does a hone take off?
Hi there i rarely post, mostly read but i cant find the answer to this anywhere, i have a virgin B16a block that im about to build for road racing and i heard not so many good things about PCT pistons so i opted for the Japanese B16 pistons. now i wanna just freshen up the hone for the oil control. now the slugs are standard size and im gonna hone the cylinders how much will a hone take off?
Thank you guys in advance!!!

depends how long you run the hone up and down in the bore.
what you need to do is find someone with a bore micrometer and measure the cylinders to see if they are round and straight and find out what the existing piston-to-wall clearance is.
then you will know how much you need to take out to straighten them, or if they just need a fresh crosshatch to run those std size pistons. if they are too worn you may need to go to the next oversize

they block has less then 50k on it i just want a fresh crosshatch, i can still see the factory crosshatch. i know omniman didn't even rehone it he just re-ringed it can cut valve releifes and called it a day.
omni probably measured it though. do it right or dont do it at all. you can run a 280 or 400 grit hone through it real fast and remove .0001/2 and get your fresh crosshatch look
well i did check it and it had about .0011 of p2w clearance and i know the walls are round, and honda recamends .002 p2w clearance. i just dont wanna take off too much while honing.

i have only seen the 3 stone hone and the dingleberry, i was gonna use the 3 stone hone but where can i find fthe 4pt? and do you recamend doing it myself or having a machine shop?
If you are worried about taking off the right amount during the hone, you really need to have a machine shop do it. If you give them the clean bare block and the pistons, its not expensive.
Mine might have been $14 per hole at the machine shop. Well worth it to not have to worry about it. And after my hone I still used STD piston rings and the ring gaps all measured perfectly so i chucked the pistons in there and didn't look back. And this was a high mileage H23 block.
