Default modifing shift linkage to move shifter position?

i was wondering if i could cut like an inch( maybe a lil more or less) long paice of the shift linkage out of the middle of the shift linkage, then get a peice of pipe to fit over the top like a sleeve, and weld it on. i just want my shifter to sit....i want 1st, 3rd, and 5th to be down where 2nd,4th, and reverse are, then those gears would be lower. just for a comfort deal. then you don't have to reach as far away? anybody think this is a good idea. i have a lift and a guy to weld for me. labor isn't a problem... what do you think.

When I put my swap in, the shifter was where 1st, 3rd and 5th would kit the front of the console. I had to take the linkage off and (where the s-curve is) bend it a little. It took a little bending (shorter) and straightening (longer) to get the correct length.

If you want to cut and weld, I don't see a problem as long as it's welded properly.

yea i noticed when putting my friends cat back on, when the shop did his b16 swap, they had done this to his linkage, that is where i got the idea...cool, i'll let you know how it goes, i have a zig-zag shape short shifter coming so maybe that will change it enough for me. thanks agian.
