Default Tri Y header questions

thinking of getting these headers for my car. after doing a lil bit of research i am just stumped on this. the size of the headers are the same size as a a regular 4-2-1 header? i have a test pipe on the car now and it says i have to eliminate my cat...will my test pipe still work or i have to buy their extension? is the headers will gain at peak HP or mid? i dont trust some of the dyno sheets they put up. i read on hondatuning.com that i will gain 1-2 more top end (depends on the build) versus the 4-2-1. is it mainly more use for built bottom ends? i just have a GSR motor, skunk2 stg1 cams, skunk2 pro manifold, passwordjdm intake and rsr exhaust 60mm.

Collector size is what matters the most. Not trying to flame, but you're going to need to do some research and figure out what works best for you. As far as the test pipe, you may or may not need the extension, it depends on the header length.

You will need a custom-made test pipe. A full Tri-Y is longer than the stock header but shorter than the header and cat together. You will need a cut down test pipe.
I also have done a bunch of studying on these headers about 1.5 years ago. I have an Excel sheet that summarized my findings. I think this would be helpful to you. I will try to get it posted tonight.

There are some pictures of a SMSP header in this post.

You will need to either get the extension or cut a test pipe. I have a Tri-Y on my car with a WS2 and about a 4inch long testpipe right in between.

Btw, the car is an 01 integra.

I had the comptech 4-2-1 ss CARB legal header, and then I decided I wanted a better header. Came across a great deal for the Tri-Y and had it put on. I wanted to keep my high-flow cat but it had a 2.25" inlet and would not fit to the 2.5" collector on the new header, so I got a gutted jdm itr cat had to get my b pipe shortened and everything fitted properly by the exhaust shop. Even when I received my tri-y, fitment was not good. The tubes did not line up and had an exhaust leak around the edges. On top of that, the header hung down really low and was rubbing against my AC compressor...

Then after 2500 miles or so, I hear a loud exhaust leak....jack up the car and locate the leak...

weak welds and possibly a weak point in the header. I did get a refund though, so I can't be totally mad that I bought this header. Some people have had great results and no problems with this header, I just happened to get a defective one I guess. I've been told if you want this header to work and not worry about cracking, then you need to get a flex pipe and/or use spring bolts.

Well, my car made 189whp with the comptech ice box intake system, comptech 4-2-1 ss header, high flow cat, and apexi ws2 exhaust. When I got the tri-y header, I decided to go with a blox velocity stack and mate it with my comptech intake arm, tri-y header, gutted jdm itr cat, and my apexi ws2 catback system and the car made 205whp. I basically freed up some of the air flow, but my catback exhaust system is still restrictive. Since that dyno session and getting a new header (rmf narrow replica aka kidd racing header), the car feels more solid and the power feels smoother. I still have to get on the dyno and see the power difference with this new header vs. the tri-y

Some of this is dependant on the header manufacture. I can tell you from recent experience, two weeks ago, that with an SMSP header on a GSR you have to remove both the front and rear trans bracing from the engine and the Flywheel dust cover. As for the fan, you will need to take the radiator loose during install to gain additional room.
It is tight but not impossible.

What type of tri-y header is the one you have? I need a header to mate with my type r b pipe and muffler. I'm really aiming towards a carb legal header for smog issues that will give me the best performance for the lowest price but also fit my exhaust system. I.E. JDM R, Comptech, DC, or any other you might think of etc...If I decide to go with a tri-y, which one? Pm me, I need to decide on a header asap.

Tri-y and carb legal are not a match. The Skunk2 might be.
