Default $160 for replacement catalytic: real or BS?

I recently had my catalytic converter replaced so that I could pass the smog check. I paid about $600 to do so. However, my boy told me that he had hookups and should have been able to get me a new cat converter for around $160. I live in CA, I've searched for replacement cats online but couldn't find a site that would be able to ship it to California. I was wondering if he is telling the truth or full of $#!&. If he is telling the truth, FML.

well if your "boy" is getting hookups, is the cat stolen? or does he work in a shop or something that can buy in bulk.

anyways 600 bucks with labor included for a decent cat that is not going to fail soon is about the right price.

...cheap Jegs "performance" cats.
I saw get something that will pass smog and make a test pipe with the same measurements. Just put the cat in when it has to be smog tested.

No mention of which set up you have and what your buddy was trying to sell you. $600 usd would be an acceptable price for a new one piece exhaust manifold/converter, whether or not that is your system. He could be trying to sell you a make fit universal converter, which you may or may not be able to use, time you make it fit, price doubles.

You just hit the nail on the head. Believe it or not I got a whole new cat. converter AND muffler for $220 installed (on last 1998 Saturn I had) because of knowing someone at a muffler shop. You're right, they're called universals and they just cut and weld them to fit along the exhaust system. They definitely don't look like the stock parts(usually smaller). Doesn't mean they necessarily look good but they do the job and will pass emissions. Yep, I believe your buddy could have gotten you the $160 price.
