Default 95 coupe, auto tranny doesnt like to shift

I just got a 1995 coupe with an auto tranny and its got a couple small issues on which Id like some advice. First, you have to lift off the throttle for the auto tranny to shift up. Downshifts pretty well, though kinda rough. And the second problem, which I think might be related the first, is the motor will not heat up at all. The gauge wont move. I was thinking thats gotta be the thermostat. Wont the gauge move at least a little, even if the thermostat is stuck open, though?
IDK tell me what you think.

you could try changing the transmission fluid and cleaning the gunk and changing the thermostat sensor could get your gauge needle working unless its a wiring problem

I have had to replace several transmission computers on Hondas around this year model. If it is a mechanical problem, servicing it would most likely make your transmission worse. Depending on how long it has been messing up, the transmission fluid will probably have a lot of clutch material in it, and by changing the fluid you will lose that added grabbing power. As far as the temperature problem, it sounds like the temperature sending unit for the gauge is defective. Your car has two sensors, one for the gauge and one for the computer. The sensor with a single wire is the one for the gauge. If you ground that wire you should see your temperature gauge peg hot, if it does, crank the car and wait about 10 minutes or so and feel the top radiator hose, if it is warm and is relatively easy to squeeze this means your thermostat has opened and you need a new gauge sending unit. Good luck.

Thanks for the advice, guys.

I changed the thermostat today, and the temp gauge needle moves now, but as soon as the fan comes on the needle goes back down to cold. I know the radiator is pretty much brand new. Could that cause over cooling? Like, maybe its not "broken in" yet...?
