Default Trying to choose a dogbox

I think im going to man up and buy a dogbox. I have done some research and reading and want to get some opinions from the actual users. I know about a year ago alot of people were selling their libertys, have things gotten any better? So I guess it would be between the liberty with billit bell housing,
ppg with the case brace?
gforce, are they just welding the case?
and does anyone run the magnus gears http://www.magnusmotorsports.com/tra...ions/honda.htm

not going to be drivin on the streets also.

cft runs the magnus gearset..
gforce doesnt do anything with the cases but they are working on a brace design.
liberty has the billet housing(but together pricey)
ppg dont need bracing

I was going to make the same post this morning. I am trying to decide between PPG and Gforce.

I like the fact that Gforce is right down the road from my house so if I have problems I can just drive there vs having to ship the parts out and wait.

I know Tony had an issue with his first PPG set but then never heard anything else about if the problem was fixed and if he had any other issues. I believe Miller is now running the PPG set and I don't see anything bad posted or written about those sets.

Felix has been running the Gforce for a while and I know when I spoke to Gforce at PRI they were redesigning some things to fix the problem felix was having. Not sure if all those fixes have been made and if the people running the boxes are still having the issues.

In for more info.

My "PPG issues" were not PPG issues at all, they were shift linkage length issues. The linkage was too short and it wasn't going far enough into 2nd and 4th.

Sorry Miller I thought you had went to a PPG box. So no problems with the liberty this year? May I ask if something has changed with their gears or did you change something with your setup?

Don't forget about the MFactory box. It isn't available yet but should be soon. They have taken their time testing it to make sure everything is working well before they throw it out there.

I bought that PPG set from Henry. Going to put it in this weekend and see how it goes.

Nothing has changed, the way the season started out I was supposed to make the switch to the ppg trans from the get go. I didnt have another spool from mark williams and couldnt sell my liberty cause everyone was whoring out there liberty boxes and I refused to take a big hit on the trans. So I decided to just run the liberty till it broke or gave me an issue and then at that point I would make the switch to the ppg. Well that time never came.

Fast forward through the season, I have now had the car out 4 times this year and have not had single issue with the liberty trans nor have I even pulled it out to check. So being a little nervous I decided to pull the liberty out and check it over and in doing that everyting looked great.

I decided to put the ppg trans setup in the car and get ready for this upcoming imstar event to test the ppg trans. I drove the car around a little but didnt really get on it hard. I decided to take the car out in the street last night and do a 3rd gear burnout and play with a few other things. Well after doing so I noticed an oil leak and after further inspection I saw oil in the bell housing. I tore the trans out of the car and the bell housing was split clear down the center.

I have another customers car here that has a ppg in it and I decided to take a look in the bell housing and see what was going on. Well I saw a light trace of oil. I decided this morning to pull the trans on that car which has a welded case and that to is cracked. Not as bad as mine but the bracing deff helped that situation in this particular car.

I am in no way bashing the ppg trans, I am just sick of the people who have never used it saying that it is the end all be all solution to the case issues. I think the ppg stuff is a great piece and very well made. I have alot of faith in the ppg gears themselves. I do think that the billet case is still going to be needed even with the case brace.

30+ passes since may on the ppg. Broke the factory shift selector on Hondaday. The gears looked like they were new. Doesn't looked stressed at all.
My case is not welded. I will check the tranny and report.

So far so good on my case, 20+ passes on it and a ton of dyno testing. Started with a new OEM case and no bracing or mods at all.

With the Liberty, I got 6 hits on a new welded case and 3 hits on a used welded case before they broke.

It's not the final solution, but it definitely makes a significant difference in strength. There's only so much that can be done w/o replacing the case.

The gear set that we have on the Red Hatch, was originally from the Blue Civic when it was running SFWD in 2003. After we decide to make it a HotRod we sold it to a customer of mine and he put it on a Hot Rod CRX for 2 years and now is on the Red hatch.

We have been using the same gear set for 6 years!

And for the first time we just had a casing failure in PR that it was so bad that destroyed all the gears!!! LOL

But if it wasn't because of the casing braking, we would've still be running the same gear set.

so what it comes down to, the liberty billit case the way to go as of now correct? I hear the gforce is a great set but no option for the case? or what can be done? I try to call them but can never get anyone on the phone, I hear you send them your trans and they assemble everything for around 4500 and ship it back and nothing done to the case? I like that g force is here in the states but I hear they do not use oem honda bearings so that can kind of be a pain in the ****! And I called mfactory yesterday and It will be another month before it comes out, and price is around 4-4500 for the gears and they say under a $1000 for there case. It seems like I always buy 3x, and would like this purchase to be right the first time. how much do you charge to weld up a case tony?

Checked the tranny and no sign of cracks but the clutch is out of spec.
Anybody have the .390 pp for the tilton carbon clutch?

Tony, ever try a non welded case on the liberty?

We don't weld the cases any more. People expect a miracle and get upset when it still breaks eventually.

I have run the Liberty with non welded cases and they crack sooner, but more importantly, when they do crack, they usually **** the pinion gear out the side and break the ring and pinion. When they're welded, they're much less likely to do that, you'll usually notice the crack well before that happens.

Fernando, I can call and see what I can get on the pressure plate.
