Cryogenic Treatment on Axles?
I am curious as to how this would workout? I have access to the necessary equipment to do so. I'm sure hardening these parts will help in the strength of the stock axle. I know I have hardened transmission input shafts and motorcycle clutch baskets that have really held up well. I am going to give it a shot and see what happens.
Would these parts benefit from being hardened this way? Or would it just make them brittle and they'll just plain snap, instead of having a little give to them and absorbing the impact? Seems like the same situation with the B series guys. They'd get brand new gears and cryo them and rip all the teeth off of them, but then get them heat treated to soften them a bit and they got a ton of extra life out of them.
Are you currently snapping axles or are you just doing this for grins and giggles? If you're snapping them then I can see you getting some solid data. But if you aren't having problems now, if in a year it still works are you going to say that they're great, given that they wouldn't have failed anyways?
What axles are you using/will you be using/snapping?
