Maybe somebody has experienced this before. I recently rebuilt the head on my stroked b16b (about 3000miles since rebuild) and had it tuned on s300. I have had no problems until last week when it "cutout" a little over 7k. It pulls strong through vtec @ 6k but falls on it's face after 7k.

Oil checks out ok and I changed plugs. No leaks and the fuel pressure is normal. It's rev limited by s300 @ 9200 and gets there quick....well did. I will check grounds at lunch. Anywhoo

Sounds like it is hitting the cold rev limit. Are all of your temp sensors working?

Ah, we do have the iacv shut down real low to stop the surging. Temp hasn't changed much here and I'm not throwing any codes but this may be it.

 

That has nothing to do with it

Your rev limit doesn't just abnormally change.

Check your map.

 

Maybe I was misleading and need to clarify a little. It will rev past 7k but falls on it's face or stumbles, almost like having a clogged converter, and stops pulling.

 

recheck the map..
check your plugs.. and make sure your not running lean up there.

 

I experienced that problem once, when I was low on oil and VTEC stopped working.

 

That was my 1st thoughts but oil is O.K. and vtec engages @6k just fine. Can the map just change or fall out of parameters? It was just tuned a few weeks ago and the plugs look good.

 

You have an S300-datalog and see what is going on when the motor experiences the problem. Diagnosis should not be too difficult.

Update: Just changed oil and found a 10mm bolt attached to my magnetic drain plug High cam ti retainer gone into spring.....Pics later.

 

When oil is low I often experience this, check out the latest 2010 bmw z4.

 

Replaced 1 valve seal, 1 retainer and 2 keepers. Started up great then we slipped and put a cut in the timing belt. Got to late to go any further. Will have picks of the retainer as soon as they come off the camera.

And now you dont have a retainer or keep and your valve didn't destory your motor??

Lucky you. How did the other retainers look?

 

Looked great. I "think" what happened was when lash was being set 1 just didn't get tightened enough and vibrated loose.
