Default need to change fuel pump?

ive recently swapped a b16a2 into my d15z1 eg civic and found out that the engine put in is using supertech forged pistons, meaning its more than likely running higher comp. my mechanic said i need to change to a b16 fuel pump and retard the timing on it? its running stock ecu.

am i running any risk of damaging my motor if it is driven lightly? or am i best to just not drive it at all til i get the car running safely?

after changing the pump and retarding the timing i was going to fit a vafc and get it tuned on the dyno. am i on the right track?
