launching a turbo car.... how to???
So i just picked up a civic hatch that dyno'd just shy of 500 hp and i'm really having a tough time getting any traction with street tires of course, preventing me from breaking anything yet.
I plan on hitting the drag strip this weekend with a set of rims with hoosier slicks mounted. I've heard from several people that the way to launch my car is with the e brake pulled, clutch slightly engaged (pre-loading the front to not snap the axle) with the rpms around 7500... pulling through 1st expecting no traction and hopefully hooking up in 2nd
I'm sure many of you have played this game, what have you found works best for getting a decent 0-60 and not snapping axles????

this should probably be in the drag racing forum..
you're right about the preloading. when your staging, as soon as the top lights are lit, pull the ebrake up and kinda slip the clutch a lil to drag the car up to light up the bottom lights. on the last yellow light drop the ebrake and go.
tire pressure and launch rpm is a lil bit of work to find out, pretty much only done by trial and error seeing what the car likes. how big are the slicks? do you have more than 1 stage boost? they all are factors. start with the tires at like 9ish psi and maybe launching in the mid 6000s. see if its bogging or spinning and go from there.
make sure to get a good burnout. pull into the water box, put the car in 2nd gear and pull the ebrake up hard. when the starter signals, bring the revs up, drop out the clutch and heat them tires up for a few s econds.

its not as hard as you think, pull ur ebrake up, slip your clutch so it pulls you into the staging beams. when your staged push the clutch in far enough so its not pulling you forward.
i think that will just take some practice.... can anyone tell my why the 2nd gear burnout in the water box??? i haven't tried smoking the tires in 2nd, yet.... but it will smoke the tires in 4th on the hwy so i assume it won't be an issue

yeah preloading definitely gets some getting used to, but it really is finding the right tire pressure and launch rpm's...and I'm not certain, but I think a 2nd gear burnout just allows you more time to spin the tires before you hit your rev limiter, more lag I guess, but like I said I could be very wrong.
i am set up with a 2 stage launch control it's set at 7500rpms... that makes sense mozz cuz in 1st gear it'd cut out unless i just kept blipping the throttle off and on, hopefully i won't kill it or brake my e-brake LOL
with mine what i do and im still getting things setup so i guess the pros can correct me.
1.get to the burnout box spin once in water.
2.go a little past the water section and jack the ebrake up,put it in 3rd gear,i stay on the 2step and build boost then get off the clutch and hold down the gas all the way and the car will drag you with the ebrake once it starts hooking.
3. get to the light rev to the rpm you wanna launch it (hold down gas all the way if your on a launch control system) hold ebrake up , let go of the clutch slowly and ebrake till you hit the first beam, then do it till you hit the second beam(letting the car creep to the light).
4.once in the beam hold that ebrake up and hold gas at rpm you want and clutch a little up till the car almost wants to move but it wont and when the green light comes, release ebrake and clutch.
hope that helps

you are the man
Nah im good dont want your motor
..
Im pretty sure you can lower the launch on the car... mine is set at 7000rpm and i make 80ft/lbs less than you and still have 10psi off the 2step at that rpm... thats probably why tim could never cut a 60ft in that car
he never worked with the launch with it... and i have the same exact setup as that car so i know what it does...

yeah i think mine could be turned down a bit, tim ran a 10.8 in the car but i have absolutely 0 experience with a fwd turbo car, i'm a big fan of rwd and awd cars but this car was too fast and too cheap to pass up and he built the motor RIGHT, i'm pretty excited to get it figured out and run some 11's

I meant the turbo setup..its the exact same turbo kit... tim made 482/388tq... i made 444whp/312tq... and yeah stock motor for me and a heavier car
if you need a driver to help you with the car im local and have lots of experence

i de-tuned to 15 psi for the street and switched it back to pump gas for 419 whp last week, i'll hit the track once in a while but it'll be on the road most of the time... i didn't realize how hard it is to get traction with a fwd car, i've had a ton of fast cars and bikes but i have to give all you guys credit... it takes more effort and skill to make these cars get traction and go fast, especially from a dig and i've driven almost everything
