Lower Ball Joint Install
Does anybody have any info on the installation with pics maybe? Link? its the drivers side lower ball joint. Removal and installation of new one. Scale of 1-10 as far as difficulty?? thanks
Searching for a Helms manual is probably the best set of directions you can get. It's not a terrifically difficult job, but you have to be creative sometimes. The toughest parts are usually getting the tie rod out of the knuckle, and separating the ball joint from the LCA. Since you're replacing it, you can use a pickle fork and give the ball joint hell. However the tie rod you have to be a little more gentle with. I like to take the nut off, and then put pressure on the tie rod ball joint (the threaded part) with a jack + block of wood. If that doesn't pop it out right away, just give the knuckle a few whacks with a hammer while still applying pressure and it should jump out. Careful not to put enough pressure to lift the car off the stands. DON'T use a pickle fork on this one or you'll rip the boot. Lastly, don't forget that you'll need a 32mm socket for the axle nut, and having a second person is extremely helpful getting things lined up after you replace the joint.
When I did mine the first time, I used a ball joint c-clamp that worked well. If you don't want to drop the cash or rent one, you can take it to a shop and have them press them out for cheap usually.
