Default how to get a d16 horse power by building it all motor?

I have a 97 Civic EX Coupe....i wanted to make it turbocharged but i found out that i couldn't do an engine swap because of emissions testing here in IL. So i am working on getting a older civic to do that. Mean while i have this D16 to work with. What are some ideas to put into the engine to give me some nice horse power? Thanx

you have to drop a lot of money to get hp outta a d N/A. im pretty sure you could swap it. you will just have to know the rules and make sure it passes emissions. i have seen it before on HT.

Do you happen to know the rules for passing the emissions test? I was told that i wouldn't be able to pass it because of the chip they plug in now on your car when you go. The engine won't match that of your car.

if you want to keep your d16 and build it up all motor you can chang the pistons and head. for the pistons you want to get them from a 88-89 integra D16A1 motor it will give you 11:1 compresion ratio increas. for the head switch to a Y8 V-tech head and with that and the pistons it will give you a 12.6:1 increas on your ratio.

and whatever you do, don't take motor building tips from someone who can't spell "VTEC". Honda should like, put it on valve covers and stuff so it's a bit easier to remember.

Yeah from what I have heard people talking about N/A d16's are not cheap. As well as the head and the pistons taht increase your compression i was told you could also go for new headers and exhaust as well as cold air intake to increase ur hp. also i heard a new cam and cam shaft with some adjusting the cam could bring u some results. I dunno too much about it but thats what i ws told and u should verify all that. Just wanted to help as much as i can. ciao

ps i wsa told if u change the head u need the ecu from the new one especially if it is vtec

i live in illinois and i didnt believe we had strict emission tests.

i dont see a problem with a turbocharged setup unless you have a filter for the turbo, a cat on your downpipe and a dump pipe so the wastegate doesnt vent into the air

honestly i would check out a stroker kit alone with stage 2 cam your exhaust system needs upgraded all the way if you have deep pockets a mapped and chipped ecu from wat i head FOR A D16 DOHC your best oem intake is off of a zc motor new fuel rail i would recommend aem high flow

but really why not leave the d16 in your daily alone and focus on the turbo build on the other car? it's alot of money to build the d16 in comparison to the outputs you get, and you'll always be dissapointed with the torque

First of all you have a 97 EX so you already have the y8 vtec head dont listen to anyone telling you to change pistons or cam or basically any upgrade for a d16 if its not turbo

If u do pistons and cam you gotta tune your ecu and we all know that requires a pre obd2 ecu so right off the bat u can forget passing emmissions with a pre obd2 ecu.

Anyone telling you to change your fuel rail to a high flow fuel rail or to swap you inyake manifold blah blah blah they dont know what they're saying

The only things that CAN make a d16 keep up with LS's are things that will immideatly flunk your emmissions test

Im pretty sure you can BAR a b18b for cheaper and faster

just to ad something, i was told that you can't use the d16a1 pistons with y8 heads because of how the head was made, something about it being more round or somethin and that the piston will hit the head... as apposed to a z6 which wont.

If you want a all motor single cam then bisimoto is the way to go, its expensive but it makes power. Now there are some cheap things to get some power out of the motor. You can do a heat sheilding intake manifold gasket, throttle body coolant bypass, Short ram or Cold Air Intake, header, exhaust, E3 Diamondfire spark plugs, grounding kit. Chipped and tuned ECU.

If you do cams or a custom header (bisimoto) it will make more power but you will surely pay for it. the headers are expensive and the gas mileage with a cam wont be that great. Although bisimoto makes great headers and cams for single cams.
