tell 'em to suck it! if your car was made with no third brake light, there can't really be anything they can do can there!?

Since 1986 all cars for the US market have required a third brake light from the factory.

Some hatchbacks have third brake lights on their spoiler, so if you remove the spoiler, the car won't have a third brake light.

The OP is going to have to figure out how to mount a third brake light on the spoiler or on the inside of the rear glass.

i believe after a certain year (late 80's i believe?) all passenger vehicles were required a 3rd brake light.

It's '86. The third brake light is a way you can tell '85 Mustangs from '86 Mustangs.

I don't imagine you'd get pulled over for it and I've never heard of anyone getting pulled over for it. However, there is a real chance you will fail a visual inspection if you don't have one on a car that should.

You should definitely mock something up. I'm just not sure how you could do it or how you would want to do it. I don't know how permanent it needs to look either. I don't imagine they'd be thrilled about taping an assembly to the rear glass though (for example).

Here's a guy who did it for his 95 Civic Hatchback.

Original post: https://honda-tech.com/forums/honda-civic-del-sol-1992-2000-1/finally-finished-eg-project-car-2530847/
On his website (scroll down): https://sites.google.com/site/95hatc...ets-go-outside

Unfortunately, he doesn't say what the donor vehicle was for the light, nor does he describe on the site precisely how he mounted the light. I'd suggest, though, that you get in touch with him directly.

This photo shows the light, visible under the spoiler, behind the hatch glass. Click it for a larger view.

Alternatively, consider purchasing from Daniel Stern Lighting, who has a number of 3rd brake light retrofits (scroll to bottom) available, made by Hella New Zealand.
