Default 96 civic Ex - A/C problem (high pitched noise)

Hi everyone,

My A/C is making a high pitched noise, if i turn it off (the recirculation button could be on or off), the noise goes away, if turned back on the noise comes back. Also, if i come to a complete stop the noise goes away (or if i put the car in neutral)
Also, i have noticed the the noise goes away during accelerating or breaking, but it comes back if it keep a speed steady (but going on a level surface not uphill or downhill)

What could be the problem? Thank you

not so much of a belt squeal. it sounds more like a high pitched noise, (maybe not so much ringing but it is similar to the same high pitched noise some people may get in their head at high altitude or high blood pressure - which i made sure i did not have them when this this started happening) ...

i am able to reproduce the sound by lifting the hood and reving the car (keep it constantly reved) (probably anywhere from 1.4k to 2k maybe? ... and i think is coming from where the throttle on the engine is (as a general area) ...

there seems to be another sound as if there is a fan that needs greesing (this sound is more from the passanger side)

my brother in law had the same issue on his 98 4 door ex. Turned out to be the A/C compressor. I have one of my 98 Ex if you need it.

zeta immersion,

The second noise that you are describing could be the distributor shaft bearing starting to seize up. Very common problem with honda's. The noise is a high pitched metalic ginding kind of noise.

As for the AC system it could just be low on refrigerant. When the system looses a certain amount of R134a the orifice tube in the evaporator can make a really weird high pitched whistling type noise.

Also check the compressor bearing and idler bearing. If you take the AC belt off and spin the bearings by hand you may be able to feel one of them binding.

I think you should look into getting a cheap mechanics stethascope so you can poke around and pinpoint the location of the noise.

Good luck with the hunt for the noises.
