5" vs 6 1/2"
Hi all.
I have a '91 Accord SE with the premium sound system (not Bose). All of the speakers are factory now, but I'm looking to upgrade.
In the SE trim, the front door speakers are 5" and are mounted in a sculpted plastic enclosure. in all the other trim levels, the fronts are 6 1/2" and are mounted directly to the door (no enclosure).
My question is should I keep the enclosure and get some 5" speakers or remove it and get some 6 1/2"s?
I'm looking for the fullest, highest quality sound possible. I'll be getting spearates as well, not two way coaxials.
Thanks,

Get 6 1/2 components, though you may need to do a little custom work on your door. Measure from the door panel to the glass and make sure you buy a speaker that will fit w/out causing problem with the window.
That's the way I've been leaning. It's been very hard to track down 5" speakers. With 6 1/2"s there is a lot more choice.
Any suggestions as to what brand/model. I listen to a lot of techno/trance so good bass is important but at the same time I want good sound quality. I'm looking in the $100-$150 range.
thanks,

i wouldn't want my components to be playing the type of bass you want. theres a subwoofer for that. for the price range, crystal mobilesound at sounddomain for $129. nothing comes close to it in that price range. midbass is excellent, and produces some of the best midrange i've ever heard.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll check it out.
I have pioneer TSA-1661's in my accord. I did find 5 inchers and put them in those enclosures and the ONLY Speaker that will sound anywhere near good in those things are the stock speakers. Which I have to say aren't all that bad. Given they are stock and all. However in the Accord, if you have a DX you get 6.5 inchers in the front and there is a basket that goes in there. I got mine from the dealer for something like 12 bucks. Made for a rattle free mounting, plus they have vents on them that face down so that water will not be an issue. The bass is not that bad at all from these speakers. They are powered by a Pionner head unit. Oh and they are 80 bucks from Crutchfield. Not to bad..
Specs on the TSA's are:
3/8" PET silver film dome tweeter
1-1/4" balanced dome PPC (Pearl PolyCarbon) dome midrange
foamed IMPP woofer with durable rubber surround
copper-clad aluminum wire long voice coil
latex damper
designed with shallow basket to accomodate more vehicles
frequency response 30-28,000 Hz
recommended power range 2-35 watts RMS
peak power handling 160 watts
sensitivity 90 dB
top-mount depth 1-3/4"
