93 Accord SE stuck in a gear?
My Accord stopped going into park. It would just roll as if in neutral.I would still drive it normally just left it on the E brake when parked .I stopped driving it for a month went to move it and now its as if its stuck in Drive?!?No reverse or park now. Could it be the TCU/ECU?
i don't think the TCU has that much control over what goes on in the shift mechanism...
rolling while in park...hmmm. i would start with the simple things first. if you can get under the car and remove the cover where the shift cable goes into the transmission, you can confirm that the lever and linkage isn't damaged or loose.
my thought is that if this mechanism were loose or damaged, when you put the shift lever inside the car into park you are stopping somewhere short due to the slack, and not locking up the detent lever (i think that's what the peice is called...)
personally, i try to avoid automatics because i dislike working on them when something goes wrong. therefore, i'm far from an expert on the subject. the only other suggestion i have is to drain and refill with fresh ATF-Z1. crank the engine to pressurize the trans and see if you can get the shifter to move..

May just be the cable because it was very hard to move and had to force it into park even tho it didnt actually park(it still rolled) I opened up the shifter and sprayed a bunch of WD40 into the cable which loosened it up alot.
Thanks
Anybody else think it could be something else?

Are the indicator lamps on the dash mirroring the movement of the shifter position?

More than likely a mechanical issue between the console mounted shifter assembly and the tranny. I would pull the console top and make sure nothing came adrift. On auto's, the shifter assembly and the tranny are connected by a selector cable.

I suspect the shift control cable. The ourside of the control cable (the plastic outer covering) has two metal ends crimped to it. These provide mounting points for the cable at both the shifter end and the transmission.
IF one of these ends separates (pushes loose) from the outer cable housing, that outer sheath effectively gets longer / conversely making the inner cable shorter.
This wouldn't allow the cable to push enough to get you into 'park'

im not to sure about the older accords, but i have a 99, and there is a shift release next to the "P" on the console. gotta take a few pieces off to get to it. just push the foot brake and push this down at the same time. and it comes free

Ending with the 1997 model year, the shifter was locked into place by a solenoid which was released when the brake pedal was depressed. If this solenoid failed, there was an emergency release which was operated by inserting the spare key in a slot just behind the shifter quadrant.
His problem is that although the shifter will move into the park position, he can't get the transmission INTO park*. In the park position, it acts like it's still in the reverse (non-park) position

Okay so yesterday I removed the shift cable. It was completely broken. Now I have to wait for the weekend to install the new one. Getting the wire off ebay for about $50+ shipping. Hopefully this will also solve the car not going into parking.
