Icon3 Changing my valve cover, all is gravy... until i see this!!! WTF!! Help me identify!!

So i got a new Red ITR Valve cover for my JDM ITR.

WOOHOO!!! FINALLY!!

So i get home and i begin my work of taking off the old beat up valve cover. I take it off no problems (except one of the caps falling into spark plug tube!) and set the old cover to the side. So i figured since i have the valve cover off i may as well inspect since i havent seen the inside workings of an ITR first hand...

So as i grab my flashlight and im lookin at the absolutely ******* awesome yellow coated Intake side Dual Valve Springs (thank you Honda), and the nice Blue coated Exhaust ones.....ooo ooo perty perty.......fdasfkljekljf!!!!!! WTF!!! W....T....F......!!!!!

Here is what i saw.......

IN EVERY CYLINDER!!!!!

WHAT IS IT!!!!!!

Guys....please help me out with WTF this is.....I have ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEMS with the motor at all...it burns NO oil, has no ticking, nothing...at all....and its STRONG with power....

I NEVER beat on it, i baby this **** out of it...ive had it since the end of May this year and ive just hit 1,500 miles.....so that 500 a month....and i took it on two road trips, so that makes it even less.....

The only good thing that came out of this was how good my new Valve Cover looks back on the motor....

The oil? The brown stuff on your head? The brown would be a varnishy buildup caused from not changing the oil often enough. Just be sure to run good oil and change it on time and you'll be fine. It's a Japanese engine, so maybe it just wasn't taken care of the best.

You're refering to the scratched marks inside the cylinder walls, just above the valves, right? Well, those marks could have been caused by a little Dremel or a rotary tool. Maybe, someone wanted to smooth out the walls and gave up, then he got frustrated and made all kinds of marks on each of the walls of the cylider head. Idk, you can never know what that person was thinking about in his head, why he made those marks. But, it won't affect the performance of your engine.

are you serious? Thats just oil that is sitting on the top of that spot....i had just drove it home when i picked up the valve cover. I change the oil every 2500 with Royal Purple Fully Synthetic....how do you not notice the marks inside each chamber???

idk....it looks kinda like that i guess, but there are no marks on ANYWHERE else....no shavings or anything, it is in those spots only and nothing else is damaged at all....everything looks really good....

has anyone else ever seen this or what??

i'm thinking someone used the valve spring tool to maybe put new springs in or valve seals in. in any case its fine.

I've seen this on several of my gsr motors. It's got to be either from valvetrain install (all 3 of my gsr's had valvetrain builds) or from a tool the Honda factory uses when casting the head or assembly at some point. NOT A BIG DEAL.....actually it will probably break in a few miles, better just ship the whole motor to me.. haha

those could have come from someone doing a valve adjustment.

if something was scraping there you would notice it.

dont worry bout it

i wouldn't worry about it at all dood. i have a feeling it's just something that is there when in the production line (casting flaw maybe?).

i think the previous owner of your motor didn't do regular oil changes though...it does look a little brown in there.

here's a shot of mine for referrence (motor has 125,000kms when this pic was taken btw):

notice that my head has those marks as well, and it was never opened up prior to this pic.

every single b head ive seen stock or no has had those markings, i think it is casting flaws honda clean off the heads in fear they would break off and fall into the motor and damage them
