This happened at about 30mph with out prior warning. My tranny shifted good and I have never really had any problems with it. I did have a little grind going into 3rd gear when I was really romping on it, but some Penzoil Syncromesh and Honda MTF took care of that.

When this first started to happen I thought that I had ran over something in the street and it was dragging under the car. I push the clutch in and cruise up to a street where I was going to pull over. Right before I come to a complete stop I push the shifter back into 1st gear and WHAM!!! The tranny felt like it locked up and it jarred the car pretty good. I was able to get the car back to my house on it's own power, but it was making some noise. Dont we just love it when a spider gear tooth decides to break off and then tear up everything else?

Not sure what direction Im going to go with this is. I have had the thoughts of just buying a brand new ITR tranny, but thats going to cost me some $$$. I have been searching around for parts to repair my tranny, but have not made any decisions yet.

I can help you out. Replace the diff (stock or MFactory LSD, I have both) or something a little more extreme like the following.

Im not sure which way I want to go with it yet. I have talked with some people the either have trannys for sale or just some parts.

Im not really sure its a good idea to reuse the bellhousing or that part of the casing. Im not sure if the parts that are now missing and cracked have altered the integrity of the casing itself. Also, Im not sure if you can tell, but in the bottom pic that I posted up you can see a nice dent down on the lower left side of the picture. That dent is deep enough that there are some small cracks and a raised spot on the outside of the casing near the VSS.

I do not need anything as serious as a dog gear set or anything like that. A nice factory ITR LSD or something would be nice, but not sure if I really need anything else.

The clutch housing is toast. I figured the case is ok as you didn't post a pic of it.

I have an ITR trans sitting here that I've gone through. New ISB, replaced the broken ATS 4.9 FD with a stock 4.40.

The trans above isn't dog engagement (not sure if you thought it was or were just saying you don't need dogs). Just a JDM ITR, MFactory 4.05 FD, MFactory 1st, MFactory close gear set, MFactory LSD, new OEM 2nd, new OEM 1-5 hubs/sliders/synchros.

The case appears to be fine since all I found in it was chunks of metal from the housing.

Yeah, I noticed the trans still had helical gears in it and knew that it was not a dog gear set. With the work you performed on that transmission you have more invested, I believe, than a new stock transmission. I know its stronger and better, but in my situation spending that much on a transmission is not an option right now.

Thats a customers trans. Has a little over 3k in it. Since yours case it still good, you have the option of fixing the trans as long as the stacks weren't damaged. Replace the diff and clutch housing, shim the diff and mainshaft and you have a good trans again.

Yeah, the stacks appear to be fine and even when the tranny broke, I drove the car home on its own power about 1/4 mile home. I never went over 3rd gear, but it never had any problems with the gears and they all look fine. It still shifted fine.

Has to be an ITR/CTR LSD or else he needs the FD to go with it.

Can I use the GSR FD with an ITR or CTR lsd? I think I can bolt the GSR ring gear up on the factory made ITR or CTR LSD's no problem.

I know it has been discussed a million times, but I cant remember everything all the time.

It gets confusing sometime... I ended up scoring a GSR LSD for 50.00 And used the GSR FD and put it all into my LS trans .. a little frankenstein haha

You can't use a GSR/ITR FD on a OEM "GSR" LSD. Different ring gear bolt pattern.

I sourced a guy that has a couple diffs and bellhousing or clutch housing whatever you want to call it. They have just been sitting and developed a little rust on them and dust/dirt. One of the diffs does not have the speedo gear or the bearings on it, the other has all of that. They look find other than they are dirty and need to be cleaned up alot. I can get the diff for $10, either one. The casing he wants like $50 for it and I can choose whichever I want with those as well.

Im not a tranny expert, but that sounds like a great deal to me, considering, Im on somewhat of a budget here and I just want and need to get my car back running. I know that I could be getting bad parts, but thats anytime you buy something used. Is there anything specific I really need to look at and pay attention too when looking at these parts?

just make sure none of the bolt holes are stripped out and the case half should be good ...
i just changed one out due to a starter coming apart and destroying the clutch housing

you might want to spend the extra $$ and get new seals and bearings while you are in there ....cheap insurance
i would get the diff without the bearings if you go that route and get the speedo gear off your original

I bought the diff with the bearings and speedo gear still on it and I got an entire transmission housing for $60. I think thats a decent deal. The casing is the newer style that uses the sealed bearings on the diff. Im going to replace the axle seals and some bearings and put it together. I will probably clean up the casing and throw some of that paint on it that makes it look all nice and new.

One other thing I just remembered. Awhile back my transmission started to act a little funny, when I would go to gear it down and put it back in 3rd gear it acted like it didnt want to go. It would not grind, it just felt like something was blocking it from going back into the gear. It takes a second, but its just not going to slip back into third gear with out some force. I asked a few different people what that could be and no one had a good answer for me.

Before I reassemble the tranny i would like to address any problems. What should I look for as far as that problem? Anything obvious that I should look for?

Don't forget the diff and mainshaft shims, but you can't order those until you know which ones you need.
