Default D16Z6 Block+ D16Y7 Head= Timing Disaster???

i know its a silly question but... a friend did this combo when trying to build a vitara piston based "Boost Setup". however upon completion... his timing just wouldnt get on point. it would run and seem to lose the timing halfway down a block...so thats why im asking... will the d16y7 head throw off the z6 block or what. Thanks For Dem Feedbacks Mayne.

well in my boys build, the car would run then die.. then we'd have to reset the timing just so it could make it back to the garage... about 500ft away... then die again.

they cam key way is different. get the cam at tdc without looking at the cam gear and line up the crank to tdc. obviously timing belt needs to be off for this.

we did that and still the time would go haywire after 1 or 2 minutes.

that must be a bad belt then... if you set the timing and the tension on the belt is good there should be no issues... is it a brand new belt and tenssioner?

i put a y8 head on a z6 block. no problems at all. actually its pretty fast compared to when i had a y7/y8. y8 Timing Belt and Y8 Head Gasket. Y8 Water Pump. modified Timing Belt Cover. works great except for an oil leak.

why would u run a Y7 head? Non VTEC head = fail.
I have a Y8 block with a Z6 head and the timing is perfectly fine.

i understand it seems pointless... but seeing how it didnt work out well, is the timing going haywire the result of running a non vtec head on a vtec bottom(block)? thats what im trying to get an answer to. as for the tensioner, yes it was a new one. as for the belt... maybe thats the dud in my boys build. it is new but maybe the wrong one i guess.

it should be a Y8 Timing belt. The block isnt a VTEC block anyway. VTEC is only in the head.

well... considering that my tuner's (good friend) daily beater is a d16y7 pushing 150ish whp(no vtec) wich is about a GSR swap and prob spent under 400 bucks doing it (milled head, more aggresive cam, chip n tune)... I'll be in good hands. Don't Sleep On Single Cams.

150WHP is nothing. And what kind of gas mileage does he get? Probably ****. for under 400 he must have gotten a really **** tune considering a cam is $200 and milling the head is another hundred unless you happen to have the tools to do it yourself. He has to have a REALLY AGRESSIVE cam to be making 180HP out of a NON-VTEC SOHC. Its easy to make 150 or maybe 160HP with the right mods but to make 180 is a totally different story. Especially NON VTEC when the best NON VTEC SOHC makes 110HP. Your talking about a 70HP gain from a cam, a milled head and a tune? I say bs. I love single cams but i know their limitations when it comes to all motor power.

180whp? never threw that number out there buddy. read again. he's been working on single cams his whole life. the cam he bought was under 200. mill work was round 200. chip n tuned himself (as i said, hes a "Tuner") you say "150whp is nothing" if you read right i said "... his daily beater..." not a race car. im doing this set up to have a lil more "umph" on my way to work (overpassing cars n ****) as it is my daily ride. now if you wanna talk whp... his boosted f23/b16 tranny shuts down any B-Series. as for what im doing, ill be happy with 150whp in my "DAILY BEATER".

I think you get confused with WHP and HP, because I said 180HP which is the same HP as a GSR Swap. In order for you to make 150WHP You have to be somewhere in 170ish HP. My "Daily Beater" has 270WHP. I'd really like to see proof of this work on a dyno sheet with pics of the car and motor. Because taking a NonVTEC Y7 head and slapping in a cam and doing some milling doesnt make you get 70HP Gains. If anyone could just throw a cam in any old Y7 (NON VTEC) and mill the head a bit to make as much power as a GSR then nobody would have B series...
You can make power with tuning but not power like that. You dont just retune the motor to make 70 more HP.
Now that number is more reachable with a nice CAI, Header, Exhaust, a ported Intake Manifold & Throttle Body, Heat Sheilding Intake Manifold Gasket, TB Coolant Bypass, and then a chip & tune.

what can i say... the motha ****a works magic or something. have i seen the dyno sheet? no. have i seen him run gsr's yes. but then that becomes a power/weight ratio convo or what not. so... when i have mine done ill let u know what it does and i will have the sheet yadayadayada. besides, its gonna be a z6 (headnbottom) so maybe it'll be possible to hit 150whp or 180hp. as for noone having be series if it were possible or not? doubt it. some like the sound and or support of b series over d. preference buddy.

good luck with ur goal but you are going to see how much stuff it takes to get 150WHP all motor on a SOHC. its def not as hard as with VTEC but still it requires alot of mods. And Built D's sound so much better than B's there is no comparison.

all motor, Y8, Turbo, Z6. Y8 has higher compression which is better for all motor and Z6 is taller (larger combustion chamber) which is better for boost because it helps prevent Detonation.

o ya and how is that? Considering that the rocker arms are the same and the valvetrain is the same just minus a VTEC rocker arm and locking pin. The only head you can run a super nasty cam in is the D16Y5 VTEC-E head because it has roller rockers.
