2000 EX Coupe with VR6 Swap.... Please be nice with comments
I understand this is my first post and im not going to be making a very good impression here but here goes...
I am not some little kid with rice dreams, i want to know the feeling of the honda community about this situation.
My buddy as a 2000 ex coupe in his driveway with a blown d16y8 but the rest of the car looks awesome. Its slammed on ls mesh and is a very clean car. I am selling my big ol' lifted wrangler to get something nice like his car. I offered him 1500 bucks with the intentions of doing a gsr swap and he agreed to sell it to me...
Now, my other good friend has a perfectly good VR6 passat rotting in his driveway and offered me the motor from it...
Has a VR6 swap ever been attempted in a civic? What are your feelings being honda freaks? would you go with a gsr swap instead? or would you say EFFFF it all and just replace the D16Y8?
Any other questions that come up, please feel free to post them.
Thanks guys

well if im going to go through with the trouble of converting everything to fit a gsr, why wouldnt i go custom and try out the VR6?
Any objections?
Any objections?
dont, just throw the gsr in, its really not all that much work.
vr6 everything will need to be custom. gsr, noithing is custom its all availbe of the 99-00 civic si.
gsr is tried and true, and easy.
but its your car, your money, and im done to see a vr6 civic, even tho i hate vw's

The VR6 on the other hand is going to require a lot of careful planning and fabrication. (think custom mounts, axles wiring, ECU, will the hood close?) Even if it was free it wouldn't be worth it.
Yes, like everyone else said, the GSR swap is comparatively very easy, requiring no custom fabrication at all, aside from a little bit of minor wiring. Everything can be purchased off the shelf using existing parts from existing cars.
As far as I know, no one's ever attempted a VR6. Several people are starting to do J-series Honda V6 swaps into Civics with varying degrees of success.
I think a possible advantage of a VR6 over a J swap is that a VR6 is very compact... it's a 6 cylinder that's not much larger than a 4 cylinder. Therefore, you may be able to swap a VR6 and actually get the hood closed, something that I've not seen yet on a J swap.
On the downside, the VR6 is (at least from what I've heard) somewhat unreliable and complex. It doesn't have a whole lot of aftermarket support. It will very likely require you to custom make a complete engine and dash harness, or do a ton of custom dash mods to make the instruments work. It will 100% definitely require you to weld up custom engine mounts, and probably also axles, and maybe suspension.
I've seen all kinds of crazy swaps... A friend of mine did an LS1 into a late model S10 that required a ton of amazing fabrication and ingenuity. Same guy also did an LS1 into a 91 Camaro, which was just as difficult. I've seen GSRs in 70's Civics, a Civic body dropped onto a Corvette frame, and a carb'ed 350 in a CRX. Anything is possible given enough time, money, and ingenuity.
But, this will not be an easy swap, and I wouldn't even attempt it unless you have good welding skills and equipment, and either a couple of easier swaps under your belt, or a ton of VW and Honda practical experience.
Do what you want, then post pics!

sounds like a big headache to me....
Why would you want to reinvent the wheel? If you are looking for performance, than do the GSR swap, if you really want some fun, Turbo the D16 FTW (GO SOHC!).
If you really want to be totally unique, go for the VR6.
But i am a mechanic, and i know that the build you are possibly considering would be ridiculously complicated, and would cost a lot more than you are thinking it will cost.
Do you have technician background? Are you good with wiring diagrams? can you weld (and more importantly plan out a total fabbed engine bay)?
If you truly want to take on this project, just know that it is going to be a headache until it is completed. And then all you have is crappy VW reliability, piggybacking excellent Honda engineering...... I wouldn't do it if i were you, but as stated a million time in a million threads....ITS UR $$$$$$
Keep it Honda FTW IMO!!!
Good Luck!!!

I wouldn't attempt it, but hell, with over 200 ft lbs of torque stock, I can see why you're tempted. I had a GTI w/a VR6 once upon a time...that torque is addictive.
Even if you did manage to get it to work, you won't get near the reliability of a properly-done Honda engine swap. Ever check Consumer Reports on VR6 vdubs? Ouch!

Damn! I thought that you were in for it. This is the nicest I've ever seen this site be to somebody who wants to cross-breed. I have saw people get SLAMMED for using too big of a rim, or kitting their car. All things aside, I know it is free, but all the custom fabricating you will have to do won't be. Even if you do it yourself. Materials are gonna be expensive. Just get the motor out, sell it, and pay for the GSR. GL!
Get the GSR. Nothing to convert or custom make. Swap it and turn the key. If you've never done any engine swaps before, I wouldn't be tyring to custom make a Vr6 fit.
My first swap was a y7 into my sol. Very easy and I'm sure GSR isn't much harder for a noob.

hmmm...... vr6 in a civic sounds like head ache's,long nights, and disapointment but if it was to happen props,a shot at getting in a magazine for being creative and being the first[that i know of], and maybe some jdm groupie's? na jk
save the time, money, and trouble and go with any b motor or replace the d it'll be cheaper

LOL wow, after owning many hondas and a GTI VR6, Im gonna have to say this would be a interesting swap. I do think youll have trouble getting that VR6 to sit low enough for you to have a hood, and still not scrape the oil pan.
But seriously man if youre thinking of going with the vr6 because its free, youre going to spend way more making it work than a GSR.

GSR has been done and if you were to swap in the VR6 everything would take months to do and everything would have to be custom. I say GSR or get another single slammer and turbo it.
get the gsr i just finished swapin a obd2 gsr ebgine in my boys 98 ek coupe it took me 10hrs running and all. vr6 i dunno...... i think dat would be weird for all dat u go k series lol,,,,, good luck p.s. go jdm gsr boost ...
As much as I would give you props for pulling it off, I wouldn't want to do it with my knowledge. I think "cross breeding" is for cars like Saturns and Daewoo's where you throw a big dumb V8 in there because that's the only way they'll be cool. Or mini trucks, but that's usually V8 swaps if it isn't something like an SR20 into a hardbody, 350's into S-10 etc...
hey guys, thanks a lot for your support, comments and kindness toward the unique situation lol...
I think im just going to replace the D16y8 and turbo it eventually. Looking at the prices of d16 / b16 / b18.... the prices are retarded for the gsr motor right now.
Whats a good / reputable place to get a d16 that isnt stolen?
