Default speedometer problems..please help

alright, so my speedometer doesnt work and im getting CEL code 17 (VSS). how do i troubleshoot this problem? it has to be a problem with either the speedo cable or my gauge cluster because i have went through 3 trannies, where the speedo hasnt worked.

i took out my gauge cluster yesterday night to see how to fix this problem, but im lost now...i also bought a new speedo cable, but it seems extremely hard to fish it down through the hole into the firewall.

i remember vaguely someone saying that they kept the tranny side of the cable plugged in, and left the gauge side out, and they went driving around and checked if the cable was turning or something...

not sure what to do..

anyone?

ya disconnect your cluster and then see if the cable spins or not.......... if it does then get a new speedo in your cluster.

code 17 is speedo cable, I just put a new one in my car a week ago.

things needed to replace speedo cable
1. duck tape
2. long peice of rope but small in diameter
3. new speedo cable

How to replace

1. unplug from trans and back of cluster
2. take Duck tape and tape rope to end of speedo coming out of trans
3. go into car and pull speedo out until you get the tape
4. tape new speedo cable to rope and pull back through, make sure you tape the end that goes into trans
5. plug both ends in
6 disconnect neg from the batt. and wait 5-7 min
7. hook neg back up and make sure all accessories are off, run car for 5-7 min with out touching gas petal
8. turn car off and back on this will clear the hard code 17
9. go drive car and have fun with VTECH

heh..code 17 is Vehicle Speed Sensor..on these cars this is located in the speedo unit. It COULD be because of the speedo cable, but not necessarily. i like the rope idea. please don't ever write VTEC with an H on the end.

I drove around the block with the cluster out just to see if the cable was turning or not...i would see it turn but when I put the cluster in, it would stop...I just pulled and pushed the cable to some degree to see what works and finally I jiggled the cable where its attached on the tranny and got it to work...
