Default Ninja 250 problem

Hey,
Today I was riding my 2fiddy on a country road at about 55 or 60 mph. I wanted to pass a car so I downshifted and went to pass, but the bike lost power. The rest of the ride home from work I couldnt go more than 50 mph and it sounded horrible. I noticed that the throttle made the same response at about 1/3 open as it did wide open. Does anyone know what could have happened? Thanks

What did it sound like when the motor lost power? The cam chain tensioner on Ninja 250's is a weak point and if the cam chain skipped a tooth, the bike would still run but with much less power. With the timing off, you'd be asking for bent valves at least.

I'd take it in to a Kawi mechanic and see what they say.

Thanks for the reply. When the motor lost power, the throttle seemed to slip and rev to redline. Then the power was lost and the bike sounds like its running poorly. I've got a local mechanic who's pretty cheap and hasn't done me wrong so I'll probably have him look at it. Is it an expensive fix? Is it something I could do myself with a few tools and some buddies? thanks

I don't think it would be too much of an expensive fix, but I would leave it to a shop to do it. That way, if something else needs attention they will know what to do.

I've done timing belt/tensioner maintenance on cars before, but would probably not do it on a bike. Here's a link to Ninja250.org that has great info.
