Default My car has a drinking problem (Head gasket?)

94 Civic (stock 1.5l)
In a week it drank 2 liters of water. It overheats in city driving. Fan works, Thermo seems to be working. I assume this is a blown head gasket resulting from a previous overheating problem caused by the fan not coming on. I also see bubbles coming up the overflow when I refilled it. Any other guesses? I need to replace timing belt and water pump. So I might as well kill 3 birds with one big expensive stone. Any sugguestions appreciated.

You could probably find a b16 swap for what you'd spend on all the repairs, depending on your situation.

Update: Car has held water and not over heated in mixed driving all week. My friend at a Nissan dealer tested it to see if the head gasket was in fact busted. The test came out negative. So the reason the car lost coolant was probably me not putting the cap on right. He is getting me OEM honda timing belt and water pump for 80 bucks and will replace them for me for 100 bucks. I think this is a great deal, Honda wants 450.00 and an independent shop wants 400. Input?

Good deal. I got mine done for $350 and I knew the guy. Oh yeah, cousin_olaf why don't you go find a damn B16 swap for $400 bucks. God damn, some people are so ignorant. You don't need a B series to make power.

GREAT DEAL! Hook-ups are always the ****! If you got leakage and overheating I'd say water pump, they do go out, and depending on your mileage you're prolly due... After the timing belt and water pump your honda should be set for another million miles Ahh, the long lasting dependability of the

Update: Upon closer inspection the car was losing water because of a bad water pump o-ring. I replaced the pump and timing belt with a GEB pump and Goodyear belt from Autozone. Another friend I know there gave me a 20% discount and I paid like 47 bucks for both pump and belt. I did the work myself with my cousin helping, the hardest part was getting the crank pulley off and believe it or not the damn timing belt cover is hard to re position in a cramped LX engine bay. Took us 6 hours with a floorjack and the scissor jack. My brother in law bought me all my accessory belts and we got the 20% discount on that too. I was gonna get the oem parts from that other guy but the day I called him he said his "parts guy" went home early. My bro-in-law says he bought me my a/c, alt, and p/s belt cause I always help with his car. Next on the list is 2 new axles.

Oh also when we first fired it up, it was running like crap and throttle response was not even close to driveable. So we slipped the belt off and skipped a tooth and it got worse so we skipped 2 teeth the other way and set the timing with the distributor, that part got me scared but my cousin looked like he knew what he was doing. He's moving to Phoenix soon and then we'll work on our cars all the time.

I was referring to a blown head gasket. That runs about 1k, more or less. I'm not saying a B16 is the only way to go. 400 vs 1400 you're right, 400 repairs is better. Blown head gasket + anything else that might pop up = 1k, might as well go the extra 400 for something newer, maybe even a new d16. In my opinion B16s aren't all they're cracked up to be, but they're very affordable.
